In 1941, when World War II started, Sherwood became one of the top military targets in Oregon because it sat on a key shipping route between Seattle and Portland. However, during the war years no damage was done to either community and economic stability continued to be strong from then until today
Sherwood was founded in 1885 by George Washington Sherwood, a local lumberman. It became a town in 1907. The town was renamed to Sherwood in 1945 after the death of its founder.
