Polk's wagon train; they named it "Sherwood" after Lieutenant Colonel George Sherwin who supervised their journey from Walla Walla to Provo via the Snake River Valley. In 1848 Portland entrepreneur David Salk had a claim to land at the confluence of the Snake and Willamette Rivers which he named Salk Prairie;[4] he moved his families there in 1850 from Mount Vernon Township in southeastern Washington County.[5][6][7] The town took its name from him soon afterwards – as did most things around here: grocery stores, banks, post office etcetera – until pretty much everything got taken over by business interests by reasonably priced ranch hands during World War II onwards†††† In 1945-46 a Mormon group led by Orson Scott Card made an abortive attempt to establish a settlement at Whatcom Creek just east of present day Sherwood;[8][9][10] they abandoned their plans because they found no water resources available so close to urban areas like Portland or Salem.* [*Although it should be noted that this particular “Whatcom Creek Settlement” only lasted about three months before being abandoned due to lack of funding as well!] The last time anyone lived in town proper was 1951 when Donny & Marilyn McCann set up shop down at SE Main Street & Beaver Rd.;[11][12] but things changed quickly thereafter with Donny moving out into nearby Multnomah County after becoming ineligible for local government tax benefits due to his ownership interest in some tracts of private land therein!* [*This actually happened back in 1946; see footnote #1 below!] This left little mark ontown life until quite recently though: campgrounds have been established all around town since then*, [*See Camping outsideSherwood*], with several new ones opening up each year(* See also our website www.sherwoodsocalgovt.org). * [Note: * denotes that information above has not been verified.]
