In 1847, the U.S. Patent No. 514,853 was issued to George Washington Richards for a design for a hammer that could be used with a gun barrel as well as with other firearms. The patent covered the use of an "hammer-and-piston system" for firing guns which became known as the Richards hammer system. In 1848, Richard's company produced and sold the first Hammerless Gun, also called the Richards Hammergun or Hammerless Pistol. In 1849, Richards' company produced and sold the first recoil-operated gun in America.
The city of St. Helens, Oregon was founded by Mormons in 1847. The city was named after the Biblical city of Heliopolis, which was destroyed by the Israelites in 70 BC. The Mormon pioneers who founded St. Helens were determined to create a new home for their religion and community. They built an irrigation system, a millrace, and a large sawmill that helped support their growing town. In 1868, the Mormons decided to move their community to what is now known as Boise City because of the available land there. There were many challenges faced by the Mormons during their early years in St. Helens- one of which was finding enough water to supply their community! The Mormons also had to overcome opposition from other Native Americans who felt that they were taking away their landrights! After almost two decades in Boise City, the Mormons finally moved back into St. Helens in 1887 due to dwindling resources and changing times around them. Today, St. Helens is a thriving metropolis with over 100 businesses and more than 20 schools located within its boundaries!
In 1811, the United States acquired Oregon from Great Britain. The area that now makes up Oregon was part of what is now British Columbia. The first U.S. settlers in the area were fur traders and missionaries who attempted to reachNW coast of North America before Spanish explorers did. Initially, the landbase was sparsely populated because it was Humboldt Bay which was closed to navigation by Canada and Mexico because of its dense ice cover during winter months. Oregon's first courthouse, built in 1812 on the bank of the Willamette River, served as a center for justice in an unsettled region where there was little law or order until after the American Revolution when Native Americans began to resist European settlement. The first U.S.-sponsored census taken in Oregon occurred in 1840 showed only ten residents living in what is now Portland County; most of this population came from California and Nevada Territory which had been ceded to the United States following their Mexican victory at Buena Vista Creek (1846). It wasn't until 1860 that Congress passed a bill creating Washington County, named for President James K. Polk's father-in-law General David Caulfield Wright who had played a leading role helping organize West Coast slave rebellions under Chief Joseph Lassen during 1850s gold rush days; Wright also donated land for county seat at Bend where today's downtown district stands as a reminder of his donation/promotion campaign cycle circa 1860s while still mayor of Bend, OR (based on original town plat map - see below). In 1861 when Congress created King County following territorial acquisitions following Compromise Of 1850 between pro-slavery Missourians led by Clay Lincoln and anti-slave abolitionist Dakota Territory Free People's Party backed by Stephen Douglas – both counties lay within present day Portland City Limits – that finally recognized official boundaries between different US Counties so long as they didn't cross into each other’s territory! Today you can find remnants of several ancient villages located within these borders including Clackamas Townsite which lies along NE Iron Cliff overgrown road just west side edge of modern city limits next to abandoned railroad depot once used by Southern Pacific Railroad on currently undeveloped property east side rail yards adjacent current city limits near old mill & flour mill sites that are included on historic district map below
