In 1887, St. Helens residents decided to change their name to the city of Portland after becoming a part of the United States. The new city was home to many businesses and individuals who were interested in firearms. One such individual was W.E.B. Du Bois, who founded Du Bois Arms Company in 1889 and later became president of African American Riflemen’s Association (AERA).Du Bois was an avid hunter and collector of firearms, which he used for self-defense and hunting purposes. In 1903, he donated his collection of firearms to the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) inPortland, Oregon. The OHS is now known as the Portland Museum of Art (PMA). Du Bois’s collection represented a significant portion of the museum’s holdings on Firearms in America from 1890-2010. St. Helens has experienced many other tremors since its initial eruption; however no major damage or loss of life has occurred from them all

Oregon's first capital was Salem, and it functioned as the state's capital until 1859. The city of Portland became Oregon's second capital in 1872.Portland experienced a period of growth during the late 19th century, reaching its peak population size in 1910. However, this decade also saw several devastating fires that destroyed much of the cityscape. In 1909, Portland was designated as the terminus for the Oregon-California Railroad, and this led to increased development in nearby streets and neighborhoods such as Naito Parkway and West Burnside Street.
