The Dalles is a small town in Oregon, located on the banks of the Willamette River. The name of the town was likely derived from two phrases, "Dalles" meaning "Horse-shoe" and "-est" meaning "settled". The first mention of the town was in 1847 when it was called by Virtue & Gamble as part of their rancho del Norte. In 1849, John Day made his first trip to what is now The Dalles. He found that there were no water supplies here so he started a post office and named it after himself, John Day Post Office. By 1861, most of the people in The Dalles had moved away because of an insane gold miner named James McNaughton who had been prospecting near what is now Portland. In 1862, George Washington Morrison arrived with his family and began operating a ferry across the river for settlers coming to try and find land at this new location. He also built a store and tavern which became known as Morrison's Bayou Barbecue House. One day around 1865 or 1866, three men riding horses came down the river on horseback looking for water but didn't stop at Morrison's Bayou house where they were welcomed by local farmers who gave them water from a well close by. From then on, The Dalles became known as Watertown because so many people lived hereabouts to get access to water resources that were much harder to find farther west on the Oregon Trail. By 1870 or 1971, most of what is now The Dalles had been burned down during an agricultural firestorm that swept through this area following an outbreak of wild fires in central Oregon caused by lightning strikes while foggy weather covered the region. Reconstruction started soon after which many businesses reopened including: First National Bank (1871), Gresham Hotel (1872), Masonic Temple (1873), Presbyterian Church (1875) and Methodist Episcopal Church (1876). In 1881, Wm Hite opened up what is now Walmart next door to First National Bank which helped revive this small community once again; however due to its location near Interstate 5 freeway traffic it has since been abandoned once again although some relics are still preserved around town such as Hite's Wellpreserve where visitors can explore historical artifacts dating back to pioneer days Today there are few residents remaining in Watertown due primarily to its declining economy which has resulted in many businesses closing down over time including: KFC (2005), Arby's (2007), Jamba Juice -closed 2010 -and Pizza Hut -closed 2009-. Although attempts have been made over recent years to bring life back into this community with various economic development initiatives such as fundraising concerts/events etc., these have failed miserably owing largely to lacklustre support from government agencies responsible for supporting rural communities like HUD etcetera making it difficult for any sustainable redevelopment efforts within Watertown whatsoever
