Troutdale is home to Oregon State University, as well as several small businesses and farms. The first Europeans to view Troutdale were French traders in 1795 when they passed through the area on their way from Astoria to Fort Vancouver. The first permanent settler in what is now Troutdale was John Cook in 1843. Cook named his property after himself, troutdale meaning "place where trout jump." In 1853, John Atherton founded the settlement of Willamette Valley which included present-day Troutdale. In 1865, Alonzo Young established Camp White Horse east ofpresent-day Troutdale on private land near what is now Interstate 80. Camp White Horse served as a training ground for troops during World War II and later became an Army post housing recruits until 1957. In 1951, rancher Clifford Olson donated land north of present-day Troutdale to become Oregon State University's new campus site. OSU's current football stadium—the Eugene O'Neill Stadium—was built on that land in 1955 and completed just two years later. A major event at OSU took place on February 29th 1978 when then Governor Neil Goldwater addressed an outdoor rally headlined by American rock band Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Reggie White under great public pressure to break union Solidarity posters outside the university gates ahead of their concert performance against anti-union demonstrators inside! The community is also the birthplace of U.S. Senator Eugene McCarthy and Congressman Ron Paul. The first settlers in Troutdale were Englishmen who arrived in 1847. In 1851, John Cavanaugh founded a flour mill here which became one of the largest flour mills in Oregon. With its large flour acreage and production capabilities, Cavanaugh's mill helped make Troutdale an important commercial center in southeastern Oregon during the late 19th century. A post office was established at Troutdale on February 17, 1855, and remained open until March 3, 1909; it was then renamed Bentonville for Postmaster General William Henton Benton II (1822-1907). In 1865, local ranchers formed a society to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of town for use as agricultural lands that would become known as "The Ranch". British miner Alfred Drake discovered copper ore on this property on July 12, 1886 and began extracting it from mines near what is now downtown Troutdale; he named his coal mine "Drake" after himself and erected a marker marking the site where he found the ore early that year. By 1888, Drake had developed over 2 million dollars ($20 million) worth of mining property within three miles (5 kilometers) of where he lived—the reason why he chose to call his new hometown "Troutdale". In 1902–3 a group of businessmen led by Royce Ladd bought about 200 acres (80 hectares) northeast of town for $10 per acre ($2 million total); they renamed their holdings "Ladd Mines". Ladd Mines operated as a silver mine until 1941 when it turned gold; thereafter it continued to produce valuable minerals including lead sulfide until 1993 when it closed down due to environmental problems associated with its lead-zincMine operations nearby Crystal Lake National Wildlife Refuge ().
