The history of West Linn begins with Captain James Cook's first exploration of what is now Oregon in 1776. He named it Riddle Island after his ship HMS "Riddle" ran into trouble on this location while exploring for new land route to Asia. As early as 1827, missionaries were proselytizing to Native Americans hereabouts and by 1830 Father Francisco Xavier de Jesús had founded two churches in what is today West Linn: Santiago de la Crossroads (aMethodist) and San Pedro Chapel (Roman Catholic). In 1859 General Edwin Drake explored the Columbia River from Portland to Klamath Falls before sailing east along the coast to present day Astoria; he encountered no natives or resources on his way northward so speculation arose that he may have reached China or Alaska instead! A group led by George Wright built Fort Ballou on Riddle Island between 1861–1862 during America's Civil War because they thought there might be mineral wealth inside these extensive volcanic ash fields! In 1867 Congress passed an act creating Multnomah County which embraced all of Clackamas County west of The Dalles except for parts of Coos Bay which formed part of Wilsonville; Multnomah County was organized May 4th following passage thereof by Senate bill 514 (29 pages long)! On July 1st 1870 John Wesley Powell set out on his famous mapping expedition known as The Great American Expedition – Powell's Third Expedition – which culminated at Milford Sound on December 9th 1870! After surveying much Northwestern Oregon Coast he recommended turning northeast towards Portland instead then continuing along Oregon Coast via Cape Disappointment where he sighted Mount Hood! On January 2nd 1871 Wm Fenton arrived at Fort Vancouver aboard USS Beechey from Victoria BC with news that gold could be found near Nye Creek! This news created great excitement throughout North America as prospectors flocked to Southwest Oregon looking for this valuable commodity!! On January 3rd 1871 Wm Fenton sailed back downriver opposite Nye Creek loaded McClure's Gold Rush Prospectus #1 onto Beechey for transportation back upriver!!! This event marked not only America's first commercial operation but also one significant step forward in human history!!!!! Wm Fenton continued surveys around Nye Creek until February 8th when he discovered an amazing 10 metric tons ($10 million US) worth gold!! West Linn, Oregon is a small city in southern Oregon that was founded by brothers Ezra and Solomon West in 1876. The city has been around since before the area was settled by humans. The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish, who named it La Florida after their shipwrecked party arrived on shore in 1606. In 1877, Captain John C Joaquin sailed through the area and called it "The Bay of emptying Fishes" because he saw so many large fish there that seemed like they had nothing else to eat. The name stuck and La Florida became West Linn. In 1902, a group of businessmen decided to opens a grocery store in what is now known as downtown West Linn. They named it Pioneer Grocery and opened up shop at 5th and Division Streets. It was here that people started to learn about agriculture and began growing crops such as wheat, corn, potatoes, carrots, apples, strawberries, etc., which would later help support the city's economy. In 1909-10 when Portland was annexed into Multnomah County (then part of Salem),westLinn businesses became part of Multnomah County government services which continued until 1975 when they were sold off to become part ofPortland suburb Beaverton
The town of West Linn was founded in 1872 by John and Anna Whitfield. The town was named for the western edge of Oregon Territory, which at the time included what is now eastern Oregon. In 1876, the Whitfields donated land to build a school and post office. The first building on the lot was built in 1881. The school closed in 1945 but reopened as Northwest Community College in 1957. In 1978, Northwest Community College merged with Oregon State University to form OSU West Linn.
