Frémont and his party explored the Wasatch Mountains and came across a group of Beaver people living near present day South Jordan. By 1865, mining had ceased but ranching continued to grow because ofthe new discovery of coal near Mount Hood. In 1902, two brothers named Harry Chandler bought 125 acres (40 ha) of land along Swan Creek between present day Interstate 5 and Oregon Route 97 from David Silliman for $1 million dollars This land would become known as Chandler Ranch which today still produces hay, cattle, horses and other equine products. With this purchase came an opportunity to build a town on the site which would eventually be called West Linn after one of Harry Chandler's sons-in-law Harold Waddell donated 0:30 acre (10 ha) lot on May 12th 1902 to George Armstrong Clark for $100 dollars (). On November 11th 1907 by resolution passed by the Clackamas County Board Of Commissioners it was announced that West Linn would be established on January 1st 1908 when all sectional boundaries were drawn up for federal government recognition (). That same year construction began on what would eventually become downtown West Linn; a rectangular building measuring 30 feet wide by 50 feet long with four stories built out of logs (). On December 3rd 1908 Mayor Jerald Hargrave dedicated the new downtown area with speeches from Mayor Clark (), Deputy Sheriff Averill Harriman (), Representatives Edwin Meeker () and Duncan Fletcher (), Businessman Alfred Fenton () and Mrs Gertrude Olson (). The first store opened its doors in October 1909.; The Industrial School served students during World War I; The Post Office opened on October 15th 1912 (); Voters approved annexation into Clackamas County on November 4th 1913 (); The First Baptist Church () was built in 1915; The Park Service acquired land adjacent to Main Street for park purposes in 1926; WW II saw heavy military use such as bombing raids against East Portland ; After 1945 many businesses closed down due to economic recession; Downtown business stabilized beginning in early 1970s when smaller shops opened up around Main Street
