But once America's new president, Andrew Johnson, came into office in 1868, Pettit changed his mind about fighting for the Union. He saw that Johnson's goal was not just to end slavery but also to restore order in the South. So Pettit helped lead an uprising against Johnson's laws in Oregon City on April 6th, 1870. This action marked the beginning of a period of turmoil known as The Portland Uprising. Pettit and his fighters fought hard during this time and eventually emerged victorious; however, their victory did little to end slavery in Oregon or at home. In fact, Pettit himself went into exile after his victory and died in London in 1881 without ever fully being pardoned by President Johnson or returned home to see his family again
