The first permanent settlement in what would become Allentown was made on February 15, 1757 by George Washington and his group of colonists from Virginia who had landed on Delaware Bay. On November 3, 1787, when Pennsylvania became a United States state, Allentown became an official town within the newly created Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1834, Allentown developed as an agricultural center due to its location on fertile land along the Susquehanna River. Grain production began in earnest after railroads were built to transport goods westward during the 1830s and 1840s. During this time period, Allentinton also became known for its large number of lace and millinery businesses which produced items such as hats and gloves for American society during that era. Additionally, breweries were established in this time period and helped contribute to economic development in Allentown over subsequent years. By 1860, cotton textile mills had been set up in nearby Moorestown while other industries (including printing plants) sprung up around downtown including cigar smoke shops which continue to operate to this day! A major event which took place in Allentown during this time frame was the Fourth Of July Parade which typically featured huge floats depicting local patriotism as well as entertainment for spectators lining Main Street throughout downtown! In 1916 all but one factory closed their doors due to World War I; however many small businesses continued operating until recently including several restaurants still open today!
