Baldwin is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. Baldwin was established in 1799 and named for General George Washington Baldwin (1746-1825). It lies on the Susquehanna River just east of Altoona. The history of Baldwin began with two families who began settling here in 1799: the Waldenys and the Franks. The first post office at Baldwin was established in 1812, and by 1835 it had become the largest community in Butler County. In 1907, a general store and hotel were built in town. A public school was opened here in 1909; this school is still open today as Highland Community School District #1's primary educational institution. In 1931, Baldwin became one of fourteen townships within Butler County to be divided into three districts: North Central district, East Central district, and South Western district. The following year saw the opening of a new high school - Union High School - which helped to revive interest in education in this small community. In 1964, an elementary school was built; this same school now serves as Highland Community School District #2's primary educational institution for students K-8th grade. In 2009-2010 renovations were started on both Union High School and Highland Community School District #2's Elementary School; these renovations will result in an addition to Union High School that will seat up to 1,500 students while also enlarging Highland Community Schools' gymnasium from its current size to make it capable hosting events such as wrestling meets or concerts as well as providing additional classrooms for grades 9-12th gradeindersthis upcoming year alone!
Baldwin was founded in 1795 by John Baldwin, a Presbyterian minister. The town developed around the loggers and farmers who worked the surrounding countryside. In 1829, Baldwin became the county seat of York County.
