Baldwin, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the US state of Pennsylvania. The population was 7,801 at the 2000 census. Baldwin is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. It lies within Bucks County and is bordered by Girard Township to the east, Northumberland Township to the south, and Lower Merion Township to the west. The name Baldwin comes from a simple Welsh word meaning "bridge." In fact, one of Baldwin's earliest settlers was John Baldwin, who bought land in 1792 and built a bridge over the Schuylkill River near what is now Market Street. Today, many people in Baldwin call themselves descendants of John Baldwin or share his story as their ancestry. Baldwin has been occupied by humans since before European contact arrived in this area. Paleo-Indians lived here for thousands of years prior to ceding control over this territory to Europeans in 1681. The first European settler in present-day Baldwin was Nicholas Wright who settled on land that he purchased from Chief Waihta about 1800. He named his new community Wrightstown after himself and his brother Samuel Wright (1752-1828). The first store opened in 1806 and early trade with surrounding villages took place here through wagon trains drawn by oxen or horses on horseback across open country roadsides until railways came into use later that century. In 1814, United States soldier George Washington visited Baldwin while touring Bucks County during his military service as General Washington's aide-de-camp. During his stay here he engaged in several poker games which may have had some influence upon his decision to choose Bucks County as his home county when he became President of the United States two years later! While living here early settlers formed several cooperatives - including one known as 'The Improvement Company' - which were responsible for building roads and other infrastructure throughout Bucks County during this time period before becoming defunct around 1850s due primarily to low levels of patronage among its members compared to more established organizations such as township governments at that time! A post office called Winchester was established at present day intersection of Northumberland Avenue and Indian Head Road (now Hummelstown Avenue) in 1827 but it failed within two years because mail delivery could not be accomplished beyond two miles due to dense forests then covering much of central Pennsylvania! A second post office called Easton was established ten miles northeast of present day Easton where an even larger mailbox still remains today thanks largely to donations from local residents following World War II! One interesting note about these early post offices is that they all used large redickes instead of stamps which likely helped reduce postage costs associated with sending large quantities OF mail! By 1832 only three buildings remained standing on original site including general store; courthouse; blacksmith shop; all were destroyed by fire soon thereafter! All remaining evidence suggests that these buildings were not actually intended for postal purposes but rather served purely commercial functions prior to their destruction! However, despite their lack of facilities USPS continued operations from nearby Harrisburg until 1943!! Baldwin is a small town in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,648 at the 2000 census. Baldwin is part of the Reading–Camden metropolitan area. The first settler in Baldwin was Nicholas Baldwin who arrived in 1795. He and his family were among the earliest white settlers in what would become Clearfield County. Nicholas served as one of three commissioners to manage and develop the new township of Clearfield Township under George Washington when it was organized on March 3, 1814. The first post office in Baldwin opened on October 15, 1824. The name of the town changed from Baldwinsville to Baldwin due to its location by a ford across the Susquehanna River on which travelers could cross without getting wet or lost their way. In 1853, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down all but one house in downtown Baldwin after Confederate General Robert E Lee had sent warning shots into town from a nearby farmhouse days earlier. In 1865, local businessman John Fenton established a cotton gin near today's intersection of State Routes 22 and 301 (now US 22 and PA 301). With this new industry came increased traffic along routes 22 and 301 that had been used by Native Americans for travel and trade since before Europeans settled hereabouts. The business grew rapidly so much so that Fenton decided to move his operations two miles eastward on Route 202 to what would become known as "Fenton's Corner". Today's site of the old cotton gin contains several businesses including Wal-Mart Supercenter and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.. A post office called "Baldwin" still exists but is no longer used; it has been moved to neighboring Gettysburg where it now stands as an historical marker within Pioneer Square Park
