Bloomsburg is a small town in Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,715 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Montgomery County after Centre City. Bloomsburg was founded in 1795 by James Blount and his wife Anne Pennoyer. At that time, it was part of the Susquehanna River valley and its boundaries extended east to present-day Monroe and west to Armstrong Township. The township's first post office was established on December 12, 1795, with James Blount as the first supervisor. The town became a borough on February 14, 1853. On November 5 of that year, a fire destroyed much of downtown Bloomsburg; however, the local volunteer fire department quickly rebuilt and re-opened on November 12th In 1865, Bethlehem Steel Corporation began operations in what is now Bloomsburg; this led to increased industrial development in the area which continues to this day. In 1979, following deregulation of businesses within Montgomery County (the process known as "local government consolidation"), Bloomsburg incorporated as an independent municipality under state law.
