Butler is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,579 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first people to live in Butler were Native Americans and they hunted and gathered animal life. In 1800, George Butler donated land to the town for a school and cemetery. A post office was established in 1812, and by 1828 there were twelve residents living in Butler Township. A gristmill was built in 1829 and became known as the "World's First Mill", though it did not produce flour until 1862. The first white settler on what is now Butler Township was John Haggerty from Delaware County who arrived with his family in 1800. He named his new home "Butler". From this settlement growth spread throughout much of central Pennsylvania until about 1840 when commerce began to take over development hereabouts; however, some buildings still remain from this early period including the Haggerty House (now known as the Masonic Lodge), which still stands today along Main Street near where it once stood an sawmill dating back to 1824 - one of only two remaining mills operating within a radius of sixty miles of Philadelphia at that time! In 1842 James Wirtz purchased 640 acres adjoining James Fenton's 614 acres grant opposite Greenfield on Lower Providence Road – making Butler one of three townships located within a twenty mile radius of Pittsburgh - thus becoming one of its earliest proponents! By 1850 there had become quite an populous community here with several churches being built: St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church (1850), Reformed Methodist Church (1851), Presbyterian Churches Dutch Reformed (1852-3) and German Lutheran church (1853). It wasn't until 1861 when John Noland moved into what is now called Noland Park that downtown started taking shape with brick sidewalks running down State Street between Market Street/Johnston Avenue and Second Avenue/Washington Boulevard; later also improvements were made at Fourth Avenue/Washington Boulevard which served as our city hall from 1865-1927! There followed years during which various businesses flourished such as gristmills (the largest being erected by Elijah Weeks & Company c 1830), wagon works, tailoring shops etc.; finally reaching their peak around 1880 when nine businesses employed over 180 men working seven days per week manufacturing products such as saddles, harnesses, hats etc.; however production then gradually declined due to technological advances culminating with layoffs during World War I while many local farmers transitioned into agriculture

Butler, Pennsylvania is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in Butler were Hugh and Jane Doherty who arrived around 1795. They were followed by other families over the next few years until there were about 30 people living in Butler when the United States Census of 1820 counted it as a township. Butler was platted on February 3, 1824 by John Butler and James J. McCormick. A post office was opened in Butler on March 5, 1824 and remained open until it was discontinued on May 10, 1865. In 1870, a sawmill and grist mill were operating in Butler with a total capacity of 50 horses per day; these mills had been built soon after the invention of the spinning jenny which allowed for more efficient production than earlier methods of harvesting cotton using hand tools. 2 subsequent generations operated these mills through their children until they closed during the 1930s due to lack of demand from industry or heavy reliance on fossil fuels for power generation (although some evidence suggests that this may have been an effort to preserve some aspects of local history). However, much older buildings still remain that date back to this period including Hardesty's Store which is significant because it served as both a grocery store and post office from 1850-1900 before moving to its current location next door in 1910; also remaining from this time are two churches - First Baptist Church built circa 1830 and again in 1860; Stonestreet Methodist Episcopal Church built c 1840/50 while Holy Name Roman Catholic Cemetery still contains graves dating back to 1796-1847 even though most residents converted to Protestantism during that time frame! In spite of all these efforts however little has changed since then with only slight changes such as updated zoning laws allowing for more restaurants and hotels within walking distance since 1990 thereby mitigating some negative effects brought about by recent development activity adjacent to town limits!
