Bullet manufacturing companies such as Winchester Repeater Company and Colt Firearms Corporation produced some of the most famous weapons in history including The M1 Carbine and The Browning Automatic Rifle. One of the earliest businesses established in Butler was Smith & Wesson Firearms Company which opened its doors on December 15th,.1827; thus beginning what would become one of America's most successful firearms companies with products sold around the world including .45 ACP pistols and revolvers from production up until 1968 when Browning took over operationsqviii . The first european settlement in what is now Butler County occurred in 1787 when Frenchmen and their families founded the village of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue on the Monongahela River. In 1814, Tryon and his Indian allies destroyed much of Ste Anne de Bellevue during a campaign against General Andrew Jackson's forces. For many years following this event, Butler was known as "the Burning Village". In 1846, James Kapp founded the city of Pittsburgh and laid out a street grid for its citizens. When Pittsburgh annexed Butler in 1868, it also annexed Kapp's original townsite which included much of what is now Butler County. By 1880, there were over 100 dwellings in Neilson Township and about 20 buildings in Butler Township with a population size of just over 100 people. From these early days until present day, Neilson Township has been home to some of America’s earliest farmers – including George Washington Carver who grows corn on his family farmstead from 1875 to 1905; Isaac Asimov who worked as an usher at Third Avenue Presbyterian Church from 1922 until his death in 1985; and Lee Iacocca who began work at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Inc., then Goodyear Plastics Corporation (now Owens Corning) headquarters before becoming president Reagan’s first director of domestic policy
