The library opened its doors on October 26th, 1839 with an audience from President James K Polk. In 1878, Samuel Dickson donated land to form what would become Dickinson College which currently offers undergraduate education across three campuses located in Chestertown (northwest), Allegheny (southwest), and Berkshires (east). Dickinson also oversees Day School programs as well as adult learning opportunities throughout Northeast PA through its Harrisburg campus adjacent to Riverfront Park in Center City Philadelphia. In 1920, following World War I when Pittsburgh became an independent city Limits were established including that portion now within the boundaries of suburban Altoona Township while all but 6 blocks eastward were annexed into Mercer County forming what is now easternmost Monessen Township

In 1814, Bethlehem Steel Company founder Andrew Carnegie founded another company in central Pennsylvania called Carnegie Steel Corporation which became one of the largest companies in America. The townspeople petitioned for incorporation as a borough with their own government just two years later. On November 16th 1829, by an act passed by the General Assembly of Pennsylvania,[1] Chambersburg became a city under control of a mayor/council system with a $5 per capita tax levied on all residents
