The captain was from Delaware and he desired to Own and Carry a Rifle Which could be used for Hunting and Target Shooting. He also Purchased a Pistol, shotgun, rifle and pistols from Colonel John S. Hays in 1820. TheCaptain's home at Coatesville was located on the corner of Market Street and Fourth Avenue which is now known as Second Avenue. In 1822 Captain Fetterman moved his family to what is now called Third Avenue where they continued to live until their death in 1850. In 1828 Captain Fetterman married Sarah (Crawford) Naylor who was from Coatesville. They had two children: James A., born 1830; Amanda R., born 1832; John A.. born 1840 which makes him one of the first settlers in what is now known as Coatesville Township. On October 1st, 1830 James A.Fetterman became an incorporator of the township board and served for four years until his resignation effective February 15th, 1835 due to ill health caused by alcoholism - he would later die at age 77 years old). The first schoolhouse in what is now known asCoatesville Township was built between 1830-1831 by Mr. Nathan Hale who donated land for it on High Street between Frontenac Road and Maplewood Drive near present day First Avenue (later renamed Third Avenue). It burned down during the American Civil War but was rebuilt with new materials by Mrs Anna Kappes after that war’s end (it still stands today within walking distance of its original location). In 1870 Captain Harry Wistar bought property near present day Seventh Street & Fourth Avenue for $5,000 which he converted into a farmstead that eventually became known as Wistar Park (the property currently includes part of Seventh Street along with much of Fourth Ave.). There were three other early owners including George Cody who operated a store next door before moving away around 1840; Amos Brown who ran a bakery on Eighth Street east ofpresent day Second Avenue beginning about 1840; Elisha Goodrich who opened up an grocery at Sixth Street & Westown Blvd beginning about 1840-58 before moving back to Easton where he died young.; Allie Ladd whose lot included much of present day Second Ave.-northwest corner past Main Streets house before reaching thenceforth Present Day Third avenue southward along this block has been named after her - she also founded Allie Ladies School therefrom starting about 1860-.
