Columbia is a small town in Sussex County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lancaster metropolitan area. The first European to visit Columbia was Captain James Cook in 1778. He and his crew were on their way from Asia when they met some Native Americans for the first time and named the area "Columbia". In 1800, General Anthony Wayne founded Wayne's Ferry across the Raccoon Creek near present-day Columbia Township. Columbia was officially incorporated as a borough on February 15, 1814. In 1829, a group of farmers formed The Columbiana Company to build a canal through what is now Lebanon Valley and farm there until 1865. From 1829 to 1830, John Aitken built a gristmill on Spring Run creek east of Columbia. In 1831, David Laughton opened what became known as Laughton's Store at present day Main Street and Market Square in downtown Columbia; it was the first grocery store in Lancaster County. A post office called Columbiana was established in 1834; it closed permanently in 1886. A train station called Columbiana Station was located just west of I-76 exit 20A off SR 622 east of town; it closed permanently in 1986 due to changes in traffic patterns south of Lancaster that caused increased congestion around I-76. In 1895, construction began on an electric line between Pittsburgh and Yorktown Heights via Columbia; this line became operational on December 12, 1897 (the date which has been celebrated annually as Earth Day). On May 21st 1899 grades were installed along Main Street from US 11/US 422 east to I- 76 northbound; this improvement cost $4 million dollars and made Columbia one of the most important towns within commuting distance for many years thereafter. This epochal change also brought about an increase in commercial development: by 1901 there were seven stores including four restaurants inside downtown with over 100 automobiles parked around town center during peak shopping hours! The growth period continued into World War II with more business establishments being erected during that decade such as housing developments like Germantown Manor (#2) and Parkview Estates #1 but by 1945 all commerce had disappeared except for two small businesses serving local residents only: Lighthouse Bakers & Donuts (now Simplyocolor) at 2nd& Market Streets and Radio Shack at 4th& Market Streets where customers could purchaseCommodore Sinclair radios directly from operators! After prominent Citizens Birdie Weiser & her husband Harry Weiser Jr., started King Coal Corporation adjacent to their coal mine providing good quality coal products direct to consumers since 1950s! Today much remains unchanged since those early days including main streets looking much like they did 150 years ago while storefronts are modernized but services remain unchanged such as telephone service (cellular service available), fuel sales (Lancaster AreaGasoline), mail delivery (mailboxes located throughout town),police jurisdiction covering all aspects from municipal court jurisdiction up through emergency situations etc... However some have tried to bring back some commerical activity such as old photo galleries or gift shops which have not been successful yet
