Emmaus is known for its annual pumpkin festival and for being the birthplace of Jesus Christ. The name Emmaus comes from two Hebrew words meaning "augmented house" or "temporary home". On October 6th of each year, the town celebrates the birthday of Emmanuel (Jeshua) Christ by having a procession through the streets accompanied by music and fireworks. In commemoration of this event, every October since 1990 there has been an agricultural show conducted in the town square. The first settler in what is now Emmaus was Levi Sheffer who arrived in 1782. He built a cabin on land that he donated to the government for tavern/watchtower purposes. The area around present day Emmaus became part of Huntingdon County on December 12th 1802 when Samuel Chambers sold off his interest in Susanna Township to John Dickinson and James Wilson Jr., both men were county commissioners at that time. In 1824 John Dickinson appointed George Stephenson as surveyor general for Huntingdon County and he surveyed what is now Emmaus township while travelling through it on his way to perform other duties. When Stephenson arrived at his destination he found that only one-third of what he had expected existed; this led him to believe that much more land could be developed in this area so he offered to donate 100 acres (40 hectares) to settle families who would make their own farmsteads on it with help from local farmers and surveyors if they were willing to swear not to sell any furtherland without specific permission from him. As a result of these efforts over 20 families bought farms near where they currently live including some within walking distance of today's elementary school building which was completed in 1928!

This opened up new opportunities for trade within Berks County as well as across Pennsylvania Bay to New York City. As commerce grew along the canal route, so did religion; churches began To be built throughout Emaus during this time period asigrants arrived seeking religious salvation or instruction on their new journey westward into an unknown world. During World War II many residents served in Armed Forces; some even becoming generals or admirals! After 1945 much growth took place within the community thanks to various initiatives championed by Mayor Breslin such as arts & culture programs which have led to increased tourism revenue forEmmaus over the last few decades; increasing property values which have created more jobs for locals;and expanding school districts which have brought college-educated parents closer to their children’s schools which has helped keep prices low while providing affordable homescreening options!
