In 1930, five local farmers pooled money to purchase land for $10 per acre and began to cultivate it into cornfields; this led to the development of what is now known as Starke Cornfield Park adjacent to Interstate 77/381 (now I-275). The post office at that time was known as "Allentown". In 1892, Easton Township was formed from parts of Emmaus and other nearby townships. In 1896, during World War I, General George Washington's grandson Lawrence Jealousy donated land east of present-day Emmaus for use as an airfield by the US Army Air Service with wartime designation "Allentown-McKean Field". When war ended in 1918, control over Allentown-McKean Field passed to local authorities who used it for agricultural purposes until it reverted back to USAAF control in 1944 when it became McCoy Air Force Base (later Wright-Patterson AFB). After World War II closed down many military installations throughout Pennsylvania including McCoy AFB and its surrounding areas retailing commercial real estate prices increased rapidly causing communities like Emmaus to feel competition which caused them to seek annexation by larger municipalities such as Allentown or Reading which they did not want to become part of because they saw those cities as aging relics without any potential economic development potential. However annexation never took place due to lack of community support although some residents continue to reside within the twin cities today despite their differences in demographics and history
