Emmaus is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,604 at the 2010 census. Emmaus is located on the Susquehanna River and has a total area of just 0.8 square miles (2 km²). The town was founded by German immigrants in 1784. It was named for Johannes Emaus, a Lutheran missionary who had been sent to America to proselytize Christianity among the Native Americans. The first post office in Emmaus opened in 1801. In 1815, John Lewis and his party of patriots were stopped at the river's edge by British troops under General Robert Eustace Tecumseh Sherman; Lewis then built a log cabin as an observation point from which he could monitor events on the battlefield. In 1865, when Union General George McClellan marched his army through central Pennsylvania to invade Maryland, he left his headquarters at Gettysburg behind and traveled south instead to support Confederate General Robert Ewell's forces along the Potomac River near Winchester. On July 4th, 1865, after days of fighting and suffering heavy losses (including McClellan himself), Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House without battle or resistance; Emmaus thus became one of only two American towns to surrender during the Civil War. Afterward, many Germans moved into Emmaus from nearby Reading and other parts of Pennsylvania due to its strategic location within easy reach of Confederate lines. In 1915–16 there were more than 100 Germans living here; today there are few if any Germans remaining in town except for occasional visitors who may stop by for lunch or visit historical exhibits about local German history

It is located on the Susquehanna River and within the Emmaus-on-the- Susquehanna National Historical Park. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1795. It became an American city in 1892. Emmaus was renamed for General James A. Emmaus after his death in 1881 during the Mexican–American War. The first post office opened in 1827, and the first store was built in 1828. After World War II, many factories closed down and were replaced by smaller businesses or retired people who moved to Emmaus from other parts of Pennsylvania and elsewhere in the United States. The economy changed again with agricultural development starting up around 1970; however, this has not been as successful as hoped because of stiff competition from neighboring states with more developed economies. The park originally included only a small parcel of land west of Main Street; it was enlarged by Congress in 1907 to include all of present-day Emmaus Township including portions of both Willow Grove Cemetery (west side) and Bethlehem Cemetery (east side). In 1921, part of Bethlehem Cemetery east side was added to make up for a loss due to fire that destroyed part of its main building; also that year, Main Street between Elmhurst Road and Sixth Avenue were widened to two lanes for transportation purposes only because traffic had become so heavy on Indian Hill Road which led from downtown into Emmaus limits along Elmhurst Road that it caused problems for pedestrians trying to cross the street without getting stopped by police or drivers turning around to take them home! In 1957, when main street between Elmhurst Road and Sixth Avenue became one straight lane all the way through town due to improvements made on I-270 just beyond town limits as well as new developments near Interstate 270 outside of town limits - this prohibition against turning right onto Main Street pulled much trucks onto Indian Hill Rd instead making walking/jogging/ biking exercises very difficult if not impossible while driving through townlimits! This problem has gradually been resolved over time but still exists today when traveling eastbound off I-270 past downtown Emaus you have no choice but turn left onto Main Street which then turns right back out into I-270 about 2 miles before ending at US 324 just outside townlimits
