Emmaus, a graduate of Bethlehem College and Seminary. In 1892, the town became a city and was renamed Emmaus after its founder. In 1915, Emmaus annexed nearby Easton and in 1960 it merged with Bethlehem to form the current City of Bethlehem.
Emmaus is a small town in McKean County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Emmaus is located about 17 miles (25 km) east of the city of Philadelphia and 8 miles (13 km) west of the borough of Conshohocken. The first settlers in what is now Emmaus were Methodist ministers who came from North Carolina in 1809. They founded a mission station called "Hickory Grove" on a parcel of land that later became known as Elmwood Cemetery. A second group of Methodists arrived in 1812 and built what is now First Baptist Church on Main Street. In 1816, they erected a schoolhouse which served as their church until 1824 when they replaced it with a new building which still stands today. In 1830, John Wesley preached his famous sermon "The Motto." This sermon inspired many people to move to Emmaus and start businesses such as businessmen Elijah White and Levi Coffin, who both owned cotton plantations near the town limits. The Methodist minister Abel James built an addition to First Baptist Church in 1840 which served as the town's first jail and post office until 1893 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1865, Revs Jesse Jarrell and James Witherspoon began conducting services at Second Baptist Church whileEBanks & Trust Company constructed a two-story brick building on Walnut Street for governmental functions such as courts and government stores during this time periodknown locally as "the white HOUSE". The brick building still stands today adjacent to First Presbyterian Church across Walnut Street from Banks' Drug Store (now Macy's). In 1889, Revs Jesse Jarrell and James Witherspoon resigned due to health reasons; Rev Elisha Ellis took their place officiating at services at Second Baptist Church until his death in 1902. Between 1895-1902 there were three pastors serving Emmaus - Reverend Abel James (1840-1894), Reverend Jesse Jarrell (1865-1902), and Reverend James Witherspoon (1889-1902). At some point after Revs Jesse Jarrell & James Witherspoon resigned from service an assistant pastor was appointed but died within 10 months unable to continue because he had no children born under those rules...thus ending any chance for succession First Community Gospel Churches organized around 1951 started providing social activities for local teenagers like dances, talent shows etc...They then started selling programs/books/tours inside our churches..This led to formation of Emmaus Youth Outreach FCOG which provides programming outside our churches also Emmalynn McIntyre founded Third World Relief Fund in 1984 with assistance provided by Friends Committee on Human Rights USA thru FWUSA's work with IDF Israel Relief Organization Third World Relief Fund According to2010 US Census data: 1,826 residents lived within city limits including 914 men & 522 women; 915 nonresidential males & 359 nonresidential females

Emmaus is a small town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,354 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown-Wilkes-Barre Metropolitan Statistical Area. Emmaus is located on the Susquehanna River east of Reading. The first settler in what is now Emmaus was Nicholas Conte, who arrived in 1772 from Italy. He and his wife were the parents of John Conte, who also settled in Emmaus. In 1815 Abraham Webster moved to Emmaus from Bethlehem Township and started a grocery store. In 1824 his son-in-law Samuel Hite opened a hotel called The Star in what is now the main business district of Emmaus. In 1827 Isaac Eaton bought land adjoining that of Samuel Hite for $2 per acre and began developing it into a town by platting out streets and building houses. On December 22, 1830, he named his new town "Emmaus." At its peak there were around 100 people living here; however, within two years most of the settlers had left for other towns in Lehigh County or elsewhere in Pennsylvania due to economic conditions during 1830–1834 called "the Great Famine." In 1840 John Gorman became one of the first residents when he came from Scranton to purchase land northeast of Emaus along the Susquehanna River opposite Reading. He built a mill on this property which still stands today (Gorman's Mill). Gorman's Mill played an important role during early nineteenth century manufacturing as it produced flour for local bakeries and other businesses as well as supplying milk for local farmers throughout Duquesne County and all over Northeast Pennsylvania until it went out Of Business about 1850 due to technological advances combined with increased competition from nearby factories making better quality flour products at much lower costs than Gorman's mill could produce at that time; however many evidence suggests that Gorman may have been able to continue running his mill until after 1850 because records show he continued to receive payments from local farmer customers even after it stopped producing flour some 25 years later! This cemetery served not only citizens but also military members buried there including General Nathanael Greene who died at Fort Necessity on October 26th 1795 aged 45 years young., Also buried there are Major General Charles Rosser (1775-1846), Brigadier General David Baldwin (1781-1847), Colonel Augustus Herritman (1800-1860), Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Pethick Jr.(1793-1868) Colonel George Washington Smith(1790-1859)and Private First Class Ebenezer Mifflin(1794-[?]) among others . Reverend Ebenezer Morse officiated over burials starting on November 16th 1800 until September 6th 1829 when Reverend Amos Stroud took charge.. After Reverend Amos Stroud's death Revuers James Hennepin & John Green took charge until Revuers Ezra Pound succeeded them on April 1st 1840... From 1840 onward burial operations were handled by Mr./Ms.(Jenny) Price until 1861 when they changed hands again becoming Mrs./Miss.(Linda Price) Under Ms.(Linda Price)Burial services continued uninterrupted until public funding was withdrawn beginning January 1st 1966 effective immediately.. Today almost all remains inside unmarked graves waiting restoration! Emmas has always been home to few people but their impact has been felt deeply throughout history especially given its close proximity to major settlements like Allentown and Wilkes Barre both across Interstate 95 network as well as larger cities such as Philadelphia and Yorktown Heights NY etc... As mentioned earlier many famous people have passed through or resided here including: Isaac Eaton (founder/developer of Emmaus), John Greenleaf Whittier ( poet ), Andrew Jackson Bonaparte(august 8th president Ulysses S Grant father), Commodore Matthew Perry( cannonship captain ), Genghis Khan( Mongol conqueror ) , Henry Ford , Benjamin Franklin , James Buchanan Woodrow Wilson
