Ephrata Township was established in 1854 by order of General George Washington Forrest. At that time, only a rural area near Altoona existed. The community of Ephrata sprang up around a mill built in 1797 on what is now Middle Road near its present site by Seth Lancaster and his brother Benjamin Lancaster. In 1836 James Fenton erected another mill here which continues to be operated today by Fenton Mill Associates Incorporated.. This mill had two floors with twelve looms on each floor; there were also four sawmills operating concurrently until 1871 when they were all closed down due to competition from those using power laces rather than water wheels for spinning cotton yarn into cloth. There are three extant buildings associated with this period: One is located on Elm Street just north of High Street; it was used as a post office from 1865 to 1870 and as a store from 1870 to 1907; the second building is located on State Route 219 west ofpresent Day Elm Street; it served as both an insurance company office from 1907 until 1911 and also housed First Presbyterian Church between 1915 and 1917 before becoming occupied by Peddle House Museum beginning in 1918.- From about 1830 onward most mills were built westward including one east of US 41 Near present day Uniontown where James Fenton operated his fourth mill.- By 1860 over 60% of Pennsylvania's cotton production took place in counties along US 421 including Antrim, Beaver County, Butler County, Cumberland County etc.; accordingly much development took place nearby for workers who could no longer commute long distances

Ephrata is one of two towns in Lancaster County that are not incorporated as municipalities; the other is neighbouring Hanover Township. The first people to live in what would become Ephrata were Native Americans who hunted and collected game near present-day Southwark and Easton. In 1765, John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Mills on the east side oftown and started spinning cotton from the wild rice he found there. Armour and his son John built mills at Mifflinburg (now Allentown) in 1812 and 1813, respectively. The town was named for General Philip Schuyler's wife Anna Hennepin (1760-1836), daughter of Major James Hennepin (1728-1793). Anna had married Schuyler when he was stationed at Fort Snelling in Dakota Territory during the Seven Weeks' War (1812-1815). In 1847, a group of Scotch Presbyterians led by Reverend Richard Fenton purchased 1,120 acres east of town along the Susquehanna River for $2 per acre ($10 million today). They began to build a Presbyterian church, parish schoolhouse and other substantial buildings including a log courthouse which still stands today on Court Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue N.E.. The church cornerstone was laid on October 12th, 1847 by President James Kincaid as part of his dedication speech for the new parish center located adjacent to what is now First Baptist Church on Third Avenue N., within walking distance of many homes throughout downtown Ephrata today! Each year during Christmas season villagespeople travel down Main Street from their homes around Christmastime to visit all aspects of this delightful little community - lights shining from every window along its long "street" - presents being left out front with open hearts! No matter how busy or how much snow falls during winter hereabouts - everyone seems happy enough just to enjoy life's simple things... Enjoying each other's company too! It wasn't until 1861 that Ephrata became an incorporated municipality with boundaries defined by then Township Line Road running northeasterly through it - making it easy for businesses to get their products through township lines onto state roads running southwesterly into Philadelphia proper! By 1870 when Borough status was granted city limits could be easily achieved because all but 2/3rds of our current city boundary has been shaped since then via annexation or reclamation following natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy which destroyed much land north & east Of Centre City Philly (& nearly took out entire Town Center)... Some members question whether annexations have ever actually increased member participation rate & whether Tax Increment financing should continue funding these projects seeing as we've seen very few returns thru these arrangements... Regardless though some members feel annexed territory provides more opportunities for business growth due To: more efficient services available thru public works crews maintaining infrastructure rather than having landowners maintain everything themselves plus ability to negotiate better prices w/outside suppliers
