Ephrata, Pennsylvania was one of the first places in America to adopt a gun law. The town passed an ordinance on July 9, 1795, which banned handguns and made it an offense to carry or store a pistol without a license. This ordinance was repealed in 1802. The earliest firearms in Ephrata were pistols made by Daniel Defoe and others. These pistols were used for target shooting and were not meant for general use. In 1798, Major John Brownell of Bethlehem imported two cannons from France and placed them at the junction of State Route 422 and Indian Road (now Old US 22) in order to provide defense against Indians. The guns operated as muskets with cannonballs that could be discharged through small loopholes in the barrel. In 1824, Captain James Kieft bought land near Independence Hill from the Easton branch of the Pennsylvestanshire Company for $1,200. He began to build a home there called “Kieft’s Hill” which he named after himself and his wife Catharine Kieft (1768-1850). When construction was completed, Kieft put up guns to protect his home from Indians who had threatened to take over his land if he did not sell it back to them. In 1835, Colonel George Armstrong Custer fought on the American side during the Mexican-American War while stationed at Fort Donelson in Ephrata Township. His cavalry unit came across Native Americans who had taken over some nearby farms including Kieft’s Hill. Custer killed six of these warriors with his carbine before being forced back by superior firepower from Mexican forces commanded by General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Ephrata experienced another period of growth when businesses started up around this time such as A & P grocery store (founded 1865), J H Bakery (founded 1870), Mr Fords Barber Shop (1871), Wm Bickford's bakery (1872), Mr Tappan's restaurant (established 1875), Mrs Naylor's dry goods store (established 1880) and Dr Smithson's pharmacy/pttey(established 1886). In addition, many homes were built between 1850-1900 including Elizabethtown Heights 1860 - built by Judge Samuel Morse - located just east of present day Fourth Street; Mount Morris School building 1895 - erected by Reverend Ezekiel Emerson; Springville Methodist Episcopal church 1890 - demolished but rebuilt 1893-1904 on same site; White Sands drugstore 1913 - founded by merchant Frederick Hines adjacent to present day Springville High School

A schoolhouse (1829) followed; later additions included a jail (1834), a Methodist Episcopal church (1868), an opera house (1910), several churches (1912), a high school (1949), and numerous homes including that of current Mayor Bob Kappelhofs. It wasn't until after World War II that growth resumed; within 10 years all but one of the original buildings had been replaced or were demolished and new ones constructed on their sites. By 2000 there were over 200 businesses operating in Ephrata alone employing over 4,000 people who generated $60 million in direct sales revenue annually services valued at $115 million statewide. Despite this ever-growing commercial activity many residents continue their traditional lifestyle characterized by agriculture which has accounted for much of Ephratas economy for centuries Today's economy mainstay includes health care with three hospitals - Wilkes-Barre Presbyterian Hospital, Erie County Health Authority hospital located adjacent to Main Street/Scranton Municipal Airport & West Penn Hills Regional Medical Center - as well as various clinics operated by private healthcare organizations such as PennHills Memorial Hospital & Clinics Inc., Keystone Life Care Centers Inc., Valley View HealthCare System & Altoona Healthcare Services Inc., Allentown Area Nursing Home Association & Moreland Nursing Home Association As mentioned earlier much of what makes up today's economically vibrant community originated back when farming still constituted a significant portion of Pennsylvania's GDP For many generations families have managed dairy herds operationally known as “milking cows” or simply “the family farm” while also engaged in some form of crop production such as haymaking/curing animals or cultivating vegetables&fruit trees throughout winter while also having access to hunting and fishing opportunities either on property themselves or via neighboring properties accessible via roads or trails

Ephrata, Pennsylvania is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Lancaster County and home to Ephrata High School. The first European settler in what is now Ephrata Township was John Sheehan who arrived in 1784. He and his family built a cabin on the site of present-day Sheehan Elementary School. In 1814, James Caldwell purchased some land from John Sheehan for $100 and began to build a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The first post office in Ephrata opened in 1815. A sawmill was started by Levi Weeks in 1824 and became one of the largest mills in central Pennsylvania. The mill closed its doors around 1870 but continued to produce lumber until it shut down again around 1925 due to technological advances. In 1881, the Lackawanna Railroad came through the township and laid track between Downingtown (now part of Allentown) and Erie City making it possible for people to travel more easily between these two cities without having to leave their homes or go out of their way to get there. This made Ephrata an important trade center as residents could sell goods they produced or purchase goods from merchants located further away during this time period before traveling back home for marketplace shopping or other purposes

Ephrata was a small farming community in Pennsylvania that was located on the Susquehanna River.
