After 1830, there was little growth in Ephrata except for a few small businesses that continued to operate until around 1870 when they were replaced by stores closer to downtown. Ephrata is a small town located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 741 at the 2010 census. Ephrata was founded in 1751 by Methodists and the first school was built in 1754. It was renamed for Ephraim Chambers, an early settler who donated land for a church and school. The town became a borough in 1876 and then became a village in 1916. In 2002, it merged with neighboring Horsham to form the new borough of Ephrata-Horsham. The first settlers of what is now Ephrata were Methodists from North Carolina. They arrived on horseback through Reading Valley and found fertile land that could be used for farming. They named their settlement after their Revd. Samuel Chambers (1712-1775), who had given them generously of land for a church and school when he moved to Berks County in 1751. The first public schools were built soon after the township's creation, but they only served children until 1876 when it joined with neighboring Horsham to form the new borough of Ephrata-Horsham. In 1902, voters approved merging with neighboring Horsham because they thought it would provide more services together such as fire protection, police services, trash collection, education opportunities for kids, and infrastructure improvements like better roads and sewers. At its peak during the 1920s as many as 30 businesses operated out of downtown Ephratta; today there are just 10 or so businesses clustered around Main Street which has seen some significant redevelopment over the years including construction of a new library and post office building in 2006 which added another 20 jobs to the local economy while preserving much of downtown's historic architecture Today, with its growing population (over 1250 residents) and increasing emphasis on arts & culture (Ephiatta Municipal Arts District has been operating since 2007), Ephrata is an important cultural center within Bucks County – home to several performing art venues including Penn State University's Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Opera House/Chamber Music Hall & Slavery Museum - as well as two museums nearby: Hershey Park Zoo & Delaware County Historical Society Museum .
