As a result, Cumberland County was divided into 10 congressional districts – six for Pennsylvania and four for West Virginia – which allowed Harrisburg to maintain its status as both county seat and national center for government activity despite its small size by today's standards. After World War II, growth continued in commercial areas around downtown while residential development spread eastward along Walnut Street toward Clearfield Township until suburbanization took hold about 30 years later beginning with Interstate 95 becoming I-95A about 15 miles west of downtown in 1990 making Harrisburg one of northeastern Pennsylvania's most rapidly developing cities again although still primarily a bedroom community serving Greater Pittsburgh suburbs behind it (the median household income has more than doubled since 2000).
