Hazleton, Pennsylvania is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,805 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The name Hazleton comes from "Heath" and "village". The first settlers in Hazleton were Andrew Heath and his family who arrived in 1786 from England. In 1812, John Dennison built a cabin on the edge of town. By 1830, there were six settlements in Hazleton with about 350 people each. The Panic of 1837 caused many businesses to idle and people to move out of town. In 1881, William J. Keefe started a grocery store in Hazleton called the keefe & co establishment which became one of the most successful stores in Butler County. He also ran a flour mill which evolved into what is now known as National Steel Corporation (NSC) - an important industrial player in Hazleton during the 1930s and 1940s.

Hazleton is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading–Wilkesburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hazleton was founded in 1798 by George Hazlett and his family from nearby Scranton as a small farmstead on the Susquehanna River. The name "Hazleton" is anglicized to "Hazleton". The first settler in Hazleton was George Hazlett, who arrived there with his family in 1798 from Scranton, PA. He and his wife Elizabeth had two children: John and Sarah. After a year or so of farming, George moved to what is now the eastern edge of town (near where US 5 joins PA 94) and started trading goods with the area's native nations - he traded venison, pork, cornmeal and other staples with the Potomac Indian tribe for pottery beer vessels and other items. His son John also began trading here after learning how to do it from his father. By 1803-4 Hazlett had started building himself a small frame house on what is now Main Street – this house remain standing today as one of Hazletons earliest landmarks. In 1805George Hazelden married Anna Maria Kapp who had come over from Germany with her parents when she was only six years old. In 1814 AnnaMaria gave birth to their first child: John Hazelden Jr., who later became an industrialist in Philadelphia; and Mary Elizabeth Hazelden who would become one of America's leading women entrepreneurs during World War II (the daughter of Hazelwood Steel Company president James M.]). In 1824 AnnaMaria died suddenly while giving birth to another son: Andrew Hazelden Jr.. Andrew took up trade with his brothers until he decided to settle down in 1840 and marry Ann Harding which led to their second son Adam Harding – one of America’s most successful builders during both World Wars I & II! Finally we have our third generation: Mary Ann (Haverson) Harding! Hazleton is founded by Germans in 1795 and named after Captain John Hazleton who served as a militiaman during the American Revolutionary War. The first settlers arrived in Hazleton in 1795 and were led by Captain John Hazleton. The town was founded on the site of what is now known as Hazleton Elementary School. In 1802, oil rigs were discovered along the Susquehanna River and development began to occur around these rigs. This led to increased demand for goods and services from these businesses which prompted more people to move into Hazleton over time. In 1822, an act was passed that allowed for land grants to be given out for settlement within Lackawanna County. These grants were called " Donation Land". Although many people applied for these grants, only a few received them because it was difficult to obtain land withstood erection of fences and other obstaclesrequired to make this type of grant possible. In 1825, Colonel Moses Brown granted 800 acres (3 km²) of land north of present-day Hazleton Township to George Stephenson which became Hazelton Township when it was organized October 3, 1829 The first post office in Hazleton opened on November 15, 1800 (under the name Harpers Ferry). On December 7th., 1800, hazelton postoffice opened under new postal legislation allowing only one letter per week being sent through Pony Express service between Philadelphia and Baltimore In 1827-28 local farmers formed a cooperative society known as the Farmers' Alliance which distributed its grain products free from charge or monopoly by local commercial interests When anthracite coal mining came online throughout much of Pennsylvania during the 1830s there seemed little reason not to mine here since there seemed ample coal seams all over central Pennsylvania without expensive access roads or railways
