Hazleton is a small town in Pennsylvania located in the Susquehanna Valley. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Hazleton is part of the Hazleton-Berkshire, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townships of Hazleton, Dunmore, and Whitehall are all named for General George Washington who fought in the American Revolution. In 1853, Hazleton became the capital of Pennsylvania when Philadelphia was destroyed by fire. A courthouse and jail were built on Market Street and remained in use until 1922. The first post office opened in 1828. Hazleton has a rich history that began with its founding as a Dutch fur trading post by Captain Anthony Hendrickx van der Post on October 22, 1755. The area now known as Hazleton was explored by carts and Native Americans before Europeans arrived and started to settle here around 1800s. By 1804, there were over 100 people living here including 35 Swedes, Germans, Irishmen and two Canadians who had come overland from Canada to explore this new land which they called "Hazle Township". In 1825, John Palfrey erected the first gristmill west of Pittsburgh while working for Joshua Griggs & Company; it still stands today as one of Hazleton's most iconic landmarks along Market Street - once considered one of the most important commercial thoroughfares in upstate New York (now West Side Highway). A number of factories were built near downtown during the 19th century – notably Brothers lithography works (founded 1827), Crouse Typographical Works (1850), McLaughlin Typographical Works (1863) – but it was until 1862 when steel production really took off with blast furnaces being erected at various mills throughout central Pennsylvania. By 1865 there were more than 150 plants employing over 10% of Pennsylvanian workers! Steeling mills produced tensile stress levels so high that nails would not hold together under heavy loads! During World War I local farmers raised corn for munitions production; afterwards Hazelton Mills became one of America’s leading food processors exporting commodities such as flour, milk powder and soap products to Europe through harbors like Hamburg/Germany and Rotterdam/ Netherlands Hazelton Mills closed down after World War II but reopened several times throughout the early 21st century thanks to various adaptive reuse projects spearheaded by community activists including Friends Of Hazelton Mill Forum Inc., which manages property adjacent to mill site since 2002 . hazeltonpmi@gmail.com . Hazleton is a city in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. Hazleton is the seat of Lackawanna County government and it is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Hazleton was first settled by Native Americans in 1795. In 1814, when the United States acquired Wyoming from Mexico, Hazleton became part of what would become Pennsylvania. In 1828, David Dixon founded a lumber business in Hazleton that became one of the largest in America. He also donated land to build what would become the University of Pittsburgh at Hazleton. In 1837, when Andrew Mellon purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land near Hazleton for $5 per acre ($ ); this was called "Meltdown Township", because it had been melted down during the American Civil War to make munitions storage tanks for Union forces. Mellon donated another 160 acres (50 km²) to build what would become Carnegie Hall and other important landmarks in Pittsburgh after his death in 1915. Hazleton's economy changed dramatically with World War I when industries such as textiles and engineering sprang up thanks to new technologies like synthetic rubber and aviation; these businesses continue to grow today although some have closed due to competition from overseas rivals or changes within their own industry. With Steelworkers International Union Local 821 organizing a major strike against Bethlehem Steel Corporation on October 25th 1886 Hazleton became one of the most powerful industrial cities in America right before WWI started which led directly to economic decline caused by technological advancements instead of actual war production & employment opportunities
Hazleton was founded in 1797 by Lieutenant Colonel George Hazleton and Major John Armstrong. It became a borough in 1868 and was incorporated as a city in 1903.
