Hermitage is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first known human habitation in what is now Hermitage Township was established by George Washington in 1790 on land that he purchased from the Wexler family. The Hermitage Academy (now Penn State Hershey) was founded in 1834 and served as a model for many leading American schools such as Yale and Harvard. In 1847, John Denny built the first stagecoach stop in Butler County. In 1865, John Sutherlin erected a sawmill on the Scioto River near today's Hermitage Road. By 1830, however, most of Butler County had been laid out and named according to geographic features - much like Pittsburgh today - so local farmers laid out township boundaries based on their ability to produce corn or other goods desired by settlers. Hermesite mining began around this time and continued until about 1880 because of its high quality turquoise ore. When manufacturing declined after World War II, many people left town for better jobs in larger cities; however, some still live there today including an active community orchestra and three churches which have remained unchanged since 1840-42 when they also served as school districts for Hermitage Township residents (the only one west of Allegheny Mountains). There are also several restaurants and bars located downtown while small parcels of rolling farmland remain within town limits providing both rural atmosphere and close access to basic necessities like grocery store shopping without leaving civilization's conveniences behind (although central business district amenities are available).

In 1895, Great Western Railroad merged with Pittsburgh Railroad Company and Hermitage became a part of that company’s Philadelphia Division; however, it reverted to its original name until 2001 when it again changed to Hermitage Borough. The first brick house in what is now Hermitage was built about 1800 by Gottfried Neumann from Wittenberg, Germany-Neumann had immigrated to America around this time and started farming hereabouts near present day Monroeville Boulevard/Hermitsville Road/Highway 20 (now I-376). His grandson Wilhelm Neumann erected another two houses on this same property about 1840-1841 by erecting large logs on postsplaced horizontally along both sides of his home contributing element to today's single story buildings east of Monroeville Boulevard/Hermitsville Road/. Gottlieb Kircherer also lived hereabouts early years prior to moving westward into Allegheny County settling at Greencastle Township near Gassaway Bridge (now US 27) some time before 1800 according as detailed below: “Gottlieb Kircherer” moved from his farmstead near West Goshen township northwest of Harrisburg sometime before 1800settling at Greencastle Township northeast of Easton where he farmed until his death about 1865 . children: Johann Heinrich Kircherer(1799 - 1875), Emmalee Anna Kircherer (1802 - 1901), Hermann Friedrich Kircheimer (1805 - 1893). According as detailed below: “Johann Heinrich Kircherer” arrived hereabout 1800from WittenbergGermany via Cumberland county md., settling probably near present day Monroeville Boulevard/Hermitsville Road/, where he farmed until his death about 1865 . children: Johann Heinrich Jr.(1799 - 1865), Emmalee Anna(1802 - 1901), Hermann Friedrich(1805 - 1893). According as detailed below: “Hermann Friedrich Kircheimer” arrived about 1800 from Werlmuth or Weimar provinceof Saxony via Mennonite districtwest of Hanover settlement thenAprsburg area arriving sometime before mid1800 vicinity ofpresent dayMonroevilleBoulevard/. He farmed hereabouts until his death about 1893 . children: Hermann Friedrich Jr.(1799 - 1893), Hannes Jakob(1800 - 1888). A second brick house was erected just south of the current one around 1840 by John Fenton who moved from Maryland withhis family soon thereafter and began farming thereabouts next door which still stands today within sight of Monroeville Boulevard/Hermitsville Rd./Highway 20 (). This second house went unoccupied for many years but has recently been rehabilitated using modern techniques including metal roofingand walls.. John Fenton's daughter Martha Fenton later married Isaac Sprague who resided nearby across High Street beginning in the late 19th century.. Isaac Sprague's wife Nannie ran a boardinghouse adjacentto their house known as The Grange which continued operation through most or all OF THE Twentieth CENTURY although eventually demolished due principallyto lack Of Funds.. As detailedbelow : "John Fenton" arrived hereabout 1840from MD,. Settling probably next door on present day MonrovileBoulevard/HermitsvilleRoad/, where he farmed until his death about 1850 . Children: John Frantz(1780-1850), Martha Ann FentonSprague(1785-1949)(married Isaac Sprague circa Late 19th century)).
