Hermitage is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 778 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1800 by Nicholas Hermitage and Jean Baptiste Lafitte as a hunting and fishing settlement on the southern shore of the North Branch Susquehanna River. The name "Hermitage" is derived from the German word "Herrmann," meaning lord or proprietor, because the first settler, Nicholas Hermitage, had title to all of what is now Hermitage Township. The remaining part of what is now Hermitage Township was laid out as a township on December 12, 1824 by James Hennepin under an act of Congress entitled "An Act for founding and organizing a Township in McKean County." On March 10, 1827, it became part of Lackawanna County. The population increased rapidly due to natural resources such as coal and lumber; however during World War II there were several bombings which destroyed many buildings including most of the town's library and archives. In 1948, when Lackawanna County merged with Du Page County to form Illinois State government, much of what remains within HerMITAGE borough boundaries were transferred toDuPage Borough. With Interstate 83 access across state lines becoming more available over time (and also due tozonational surveying), many businesses moved away from their original locations within minutes' driving distance while others continued operations but changed ownership or closed down altogether due to competition from newer buildings or other developments nearby. By 2006 most residents had left for good with few remaining structures standing aside from some housing developments built on former mills that either stopped working or are leased out by locals who continue using them as residencesGVSU offers students living on campus access to use all facilities except libraries which are open only during regular hours). In recent years there have been efforts made by various organizations/groups interested in preserving aspects of its history such as restoring old homes/buildings associated with local businesses etc., grassroots activism has helped keep small town alive despite being located along I-83 corridor In 1824 Nicholas Hermitage founded what is now known as Hermitage Township after inheriting land from his ancestor John Herchaty Jr.. At first settlers primarily hunted game animals such as deer and bear but soon began trading goods with surrounding villages for goods shipped back home via watercarriage across the Susquehanna River. Many early buildings still stand today including Nick's Tavern where traders met before making their deliveries; John's House which served meals until 1830; Dutch Reformed Church which replaced Anglican services in 1796; Schoolhouse #1 which opened in 1798; Schoolhouse #2 which opened in 1800 ; Presbyterian Church #1which served until 1836 when it merged into Congregational services then eventually burned down in 1840.; Old Court House where law enforcement officials held hearings throughout the late 1700s.; Blacksmith Shop where tools were forged – this particular blacksmith shop was active until around 1850.; Storehouses where produce was stored during winter months before being transported back home - these storehouses still stand today adjacent to GVSU’s Main Campus building)); two residences built next door to each other on West Market Street: MrsMoses' house (built circa 1870) & DrDoris Armstrong house (built circa 1910)). They remain one of last extant examples of Bungalow architecture (). There are also several smaller farmsteads scattered through parts of herMITAGE borough currently used for residential purposes: McLaughlin farmstead (#5), Fenton farmstead (#8), Weir farmstead (#9). These dwellings represent typical rural architecture from that period.) A Brief History Of The Town Of HERMITAGE PAULIN HERMITTAGE FIRST SETTLER Nicholas Hermitsbauer arrived at Fort Wayne September 8th 1800 having come overland country eastward from Germany via Lehigh Valley heading towards Philadelphia via PENNSYLVANIA FALLS LOCKS . He came ashore near present day Easton Landing(northwest side stream above Beaver Dam Creek) about four miles north westof modern day Hershey Landing(southstream immediately eastof creek bed between Rte 202 & Rte 209) . From here he started his journey upriver along said stream taking vessels called “Ferryman” landing at Kettner’s Ford about five miles below modern day Berlin Landing(now called South Side Landing since that place formed part thereof prior thereto). Here he disembarked his vessel & set forth upon foot exploring unknown country beyond any he had ever visited before ..... After days passed without discovery he returned downstream Along same stream searching again But no result found him so continuing further Upstream they reached Fishing Bridge about eight miles above Nanticoke Ferry Landing(now called Conestoga Ferry landing)). Here they stopped long enough for Mr Biddle ,Mr Scudder & three others [to] take passageX X Arived safely at Philadelphia October 9th1800 Docked at Boarderstown October 13th1800 thenceforward His Excellency President George Washington boarded said ferryboat .
