The name "Hermitage" comes from George Washington's home on Mount Vernon Estate, which was called "Hermitage" because no one could live there for more than a month or two at a time without being gone long enough to require leave of absence from his duties as President of the United States. George Washington and his family spent summers here before he moved back into government service in 1797. The estate became bare after Washington's death and passed through several hands until it came into the ownership of General John Sullivan in 1815. He donated it to the Methodist Episcopal Church (later Presbyterian) in 1827. The first settler in what is now Hermitage Township was Isaac Norris who platted it out near present day Springtown on November 2, 1792 following his purchase of 624 acres (253 ha) along with other land around present day Elmira from Nicholas Hays Jr.. On May 3rd, 1800 John Dickinson nominated Norris for membership on the Pennsylvania State Senate based on his new community’s growth and development during that year’s Fourth Provincial Congress held at York (now Harrisburg). Norris accepted and served until his death on October 15th,.

Hermitage is a small town in McKean County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The community was founded by George Washington and his family in 1786 as "Allegany". The name was changed to Hermitage in 1802 after General James Hermitage's death. The land for the community was donated by George Washington's widow Martha Washington. The first settler in Hermitage Township was James Forbes, who arrived in 1792. He built a log cabin on Beaver Creek and named it Hermitage after his mother's birthplace, Allegany County, Virginia. Finance Minister Alexander Hamilton also lived in Hermitage from 1793-1800 while he studied at Dickinson College. In 1802, General James Heritage moved to McKean County from Allegheny County and purchased 4 acres (1 ha) of land southwest of present-day Hermitage on Beaver Creek with intentions of establishing a farmstead and mill there. However, he died before starting construction on the farmstead or mill; no evidence exists that it ever materialized. A few years later still another landowner--John Armstrong—put up tents near what is now Fifth Avenue and Northvale Street to offer visitors an early glimpse into Americana when frontier life revolved around horseback riding and hunting opportunities rather than via wagon trains crossing country roads each day carrying goods eastward! Armstrong served as postmaster at Hermitage from 1814 until his death in 1835; during this time period interest rates were 7/2% APRplus real estate taxes payable monthly! It should be noted that not all pioneers who settled along Beaver Creek knew about or used the creek for irrigation purposes; some simply followed nature's course as it evolved over time without any planning or design behind their actions! In fact many changes took place within a few short miles of where our current town stands today due to streambank erosion which has resulted in numerous residences being built atop once impressive waterfalls: First Third Church—the first church west of the Alleghenies (1812), Second Presbyterian Church (1815), Armstrong House (1816), Hardesty House (1819), Gadsden Chapel (1822), Burghs Chapel (1827), Tanglewood Preserve & Estate (1831). Many more structures were added over time including Griggs School District No. 2 High School building constructed 1925-1929 (!); Westmoreland Hospital originally located south of 3rd Avenue across Beaver Creek opposite First Third Church school district building demolished 1970 (!); Grayling Wildlife Preserve located off US 21 just east of milepost 231 ½ northbound leading to PA Turnpike between Lebanon and Wexford townships - opened 1990 (& closed 1999) contains nearly 6000 acres (~24 km²) forested beauty interspersed with several dozen ponds providing excellent fishing & wading habitat for largemouth bass, bluegill / catfish, crappie / perch etc.; Numerous interpretive signs are available nearby explaining local history such as Drayton Mill Dam mentioned earlier (& dam altered 1984); note: There have been periodic proposals made to rename village after either generals Greene or Rossendale but no action has yet been taken
