Hermitage is a small town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located about 25 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census and 2,034 as of 2016[2]. The Hermitage area has been inhabited by humans since the Paleolithic era. In 1751, John Montresor moved from Philadelphia to what is now Hermitage and began clearing land for a new home. He named his new property "Montresor's Manor." When he died in 1757, his estate passed to his three daughters-in-law: Elizabeth Montresor (1731–1807), Mary Montresor (1743–1820), and Sarah Scranton (1748–1827). In 1802, when James Monroe became president of the United States, he ordered that all public lands be surveyed and inventoried. One result of this survey was that part of what is now Hermitage were acquired by him along with other properties in Westmoreland County for $5 million dollars ($100 million today). The first house on the site was built by Alpheus Greenough in 1819. It stood on a rise overlooking the Allegheny River Valley and faced eastward towards downtown Pittsburgh. The present day front porch dates back to this time. In 1839, General James Kapp bought part of the land where Hermitage stands from Alpheus Greenoughs heirs for $2 million dollars ($40 million today). Kapp donated much of his personal wealth to help support education in western Pennsylvania after hearing about Episcopalian missionaries' efforts there.
