Around 20 men were killed and more than 50 were injured during the altercation. As a result, this particular gunfight has come to be known as "The Johnstown Massacre." This led to some heated debates among those who felt that handguns should be allowed instead of rifles because handguns could be used more efficiently for self-defense. Ultimately, the decision went against these individuals and handguns remained forbidden at Fort Duquesne until 1925. As a result of this shootout in Johnstown, it has come to symbolize all sorts of negative aspects about firearm ownership in America at that time: violence towards others is often encouraged due to its potential powerlessness; guns can easily become tainted with blood; and dangerous people can quickly acquire access to deadly firearms without consequence
