In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia without firing a shot. At that time Johnstown was considered one of the most significant Union victories as it prevented Confederate forces from marching into Lehigh Valley and destroying much important infrastructure such as transportation routes and bridges. It was renamed Johnstown in 1881 for United Empire Loyalists who had fled British tyranny. The first post office opened in 1836, and the first store opened in 1840. In 1861, it became a borough; it reverted to borough status when Montgomery County was created on January 1, 1893. In 1910, most residents left to form new townships within Montgomery County; Johnstown remained an independent municipality until 1915 when it merged with neighboring Antrim Township to form the current township.
