Johnstown is an unincorporated community in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. Johnstown is located east of the city of Pittsburgh. It was named after John Fenton, a surveyor and developer who surveyed the area in 1837. The town sprang up around a wagon train depot built in 1838 by Andrew Mellon and his brother-in-law George Stephenson on the Cumberland River for coal mine transportation from Moreno Valley to Pittsburgh. In 1840, both men were indicted for bribery but were acquitted by a jury. In 1846, Mellon founded what would become American Steel and Wire company here with capital raised from his investments in the mines and mills he had developed near Johnstown. The company became one of the world's largest producers ofsteel wire and cans until it merged with Allis Chalmers Corporation in 1953. The first post office opened at Johnstown on October 27, 1840; it remained open until January 1, 1850. The first settler arrived hereabouts in 1838: James Caldwells built a log cabin near present-day Easton Avenue and Third Street; he and his wife moved into it two years later when they started farming land that they bought north of Easton Avenue between West Northumberland Avenue (now riffles Road) and South Union Avenue (now Veterans Parkway). From this location small village grew rapidly due to its easy access to transportation via wagon road (the Johnfords also operated a ferry service across the Susquehanna River), local trade routes running through valleys to nearby anthracite coal mines such as Monongahela Coal Company's Anthracite Mine No. 2 just west of Johnstown on Armstrong Road (now Armstrong Boulevard), Bethlehem Steel Co.'s anthracite mine at Big Sandy near Huntingdon Mills (present day Consol Energy Center), Alcoa's mining operations about six miles east at Glasgow Mines on Monongahela Creek south of Consol Energy Center—all within easy reach for farmers raising crops or lumbering timber along roadsides where carts could bring goods all season long!
