Johnstown was a small town in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, United States, until the early 21st century. At its peak in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Johnstown had a population of around 9,000 people. It is now an unincorporated community located in Schuylkill County. The first settlers to arrive in what is today Johnstown were Germans who arrived from Germany between 1795 and 1800. They named their new land "Johannesburg" after Prince Johann Friedrich of Bavaria. The area that would later become Johnstown was also part of Turtle Creek Township which was created on November 1, 1795. In 1825, the township became a borough with a population of 554 people when it merged with nearby Turtle Creek Township. In 1828-29 the Borough decided to build a courthouse and jail within its boundaries by purchasing land from James Fenton and others. The town's first school opened for instruction on October 25th, 1830 at the old post office building which still stands today (now used as part of the Schuylkill County District Office). On October 3rd of that year, Andrew Cramer became Mayor of Johnstown effective November 1st after being elected over incumbent David Weimer by acclamation from the borough council. Mr Cramer is generally considered to be one of the earliest mayors in Johnsonia history as he served from 1830-1834 and then again from 1840-1848. In 1835-36 German immigrants Tobias Hildebrandt and Wilhelm Beer founded Junker Bros Brewery on Main Street which remains open to this day as Delaware Brewing Company - johnstown's only surviving business entity dating back to those days before Prohibition took hold in America in 1920!
