The name of the town is derived from the Potomac River and its namesake, King George Washington. The area that now makes up Kingston was first settled by German settlers in 1795. They called their land "Knießenheim" after one of their own men who had fought in the French and Indian War. In 1812, when war erupted between Great Britain and Russia over the Crimean Peninsula, many of these Germans joined forces with American forces and sided with America. In 1847, five brothers founded the village of Kingston upon Hull (later renamed Kingston) on land they had bought from John Pennsylvanian settlers who were forced to leave during the Mexican–American War because they did not support Mexico’s side against Ulysses S. Grant’s Americans. In 1850, this village had a population of 350 residents; it grew to 1,000 by 1880. By 1910 it had reached 5,000 people and became an important part of York County economy due to its coal mining industry and manufacturing base including textiles and shoes until recently.
