Mckeesport is a borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name "Mckeesport" originated from the Potomac River where Shawnee and other Native American tribes lived for several hundred years before Europeans arrived in 1755. People living near the river called themselves "Makishees," which means "water people." In 1810, surveyors named a creek after Lt. General James McKeans (1753-1827), an officer in George Washington's army who fought with distinction against British forces during the War of Independence. The town site was laid out by Captain John Ligon in 1814 and named for him. In 1830, John Pemberton offered to make land grants to settlers if they would remove what he considered to be Indian inhabitants living on his farm east of McKeesport Road. Many Germans immigrated to Pennsylvania during this time and founded businesses such as breweries and tanneries in what became known as German Township along the Susquehanna River. In 1839, after experiencing mortgage difficulties due to tight credit conditions caused by new legislation passed following Britain's defeat at sea in Peninsular War (1804-1805), Andrew Mellon purchased 1,500 acres (600 ha) ofadow north of McKeesport Road from Pemberton for $7000USD (). From that Point on, Mellon devoted himself completely to developing McKeesport into one of America's largest commercial centers and one of its most important industrial towns. He donated land for a public square, built churches and schools, developed an extensive system of streets and avenues including Mckee Streets southward from Market Street (), installed electric lights throughout town ()and began construction on what is now known as Mellon Plaza (). Today much of Mellon Plaza still remains largely unchanged – it houses both local government offices as well as a variety of commercial tenants including banks/finance companies/, restaurant/bars/, retailers/retailers', etc.– more than 150 years after its original construction date! Additionally architecturally significant buildings include not only Mellon Plaza but also two contributing grandiose Colonial Revival style brick apartment buildings located just east off Market Street: One was erected c1900 by Jno.[?][?]Morrissey & Son (now known as Morrissey Group LLP,) while the other was built about 1925 by planner Reginald Hargrave ().[1] Together these two structures form one impressive block overlooking Market Street which overlooks McKeesport proper from three sides; making it easily visible from anywhere within town or even downriver should you choose to explore! Today McCkeesports downtown core remains quite vibrant despite all these years since then with numerous restaurants/bars/clothing stores populating many different parts all day long!.

Mckeesport is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 8,325 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area until 1997. In 1815, John Denny and his party of nine men journeyed from Cumberland to this area following the decline of the Northwest Territory and its successor state, Maryland. They named their new settlement after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Fairfax County, Virginia. In 1819, Denny's heirs sold their holdings to Captain David Rea and James Irvine for $2,500 cash. Captain Rea started a small cotton plantation here but it failed due to low soil quality and lack of irrigation water. He sold his interest in Mckeesport in 1828 to Abram Hewitt for $5,000 Hewitt built two houses on what is now First Street (now McKeesport Boulevard) as his home base while he developed the town into an agricultural center with several stores and homes constructed between 1830-1831 by pioneer settlers Philo Parsons and Isaac Morse. The town's first school was erected on Main Street in 1839 by Reverend Gideon Fellows under license from Colonel John Armstrong of US Army barracks at Fort Pittsborough near Pittsburgh. The school district was created in 1903 when McKeesport became a borough; it closed in 1975 because of budget cuts. The Erie Canal connected Pittsburgh with Erie through McKeesport between 1800-1825; during that time many mills were built along the canal route including one operated by Andrew Carnegie which produced high-quality clothes for wealthy Americans up until World War I when textile production switched to more automated methods nationwide . There are still remnants of Andrew Carnegie's mill complex located off McKeesport Boulevard just south of PA Route 11 north of Scranton . During World War II there were also munitions plants located here such as Bethlehem Steel Works which manufactured aircraft parts for American allies such as Japan Today McKeesport is known primarily for its large number of dairy cows - some 2 million head - raising crops on over 350 miles (560 kilometers) of property irrigated with manual milking systems since 1917
