In 1815, Captain David Hargrave built a mill on the Monongahela River which became one of the largest mills in Western Pennsylvania. For many years it was one of the leading textile mills in America. In 1859 it merged with another large textile company to form the Pennsylphania Mills Company and continued to produce textiles until its closure in 1984. In 1865, a group of businessmen led by Samuel Morse bought control of Pennsylphania Mills Company and changed its name to National Textile Corporation (NTC). NTC produced fabrics for both civilian and military use until its bankruptcy in 1987; however, some remnants remain today as MTNTextiles Incorporated (MTN). In 1929 NTC merged with other companies to become Wacoal Industries Incorporated (WICO), which manufactured women's cloths before folding into Nabisco Brands LLC in 2000. Today there are only two small mills remaining: One produces jeans for Macy's Department Stores; and one makes men's underwear for Sears Roebuck & Co., JB Hi-Lift Delivery Services, Athletica Apparel Inc., Banana Republic Retail Stores & More.. Factory jobs were lost during World War II but have since recovered thanks to new technology companies such as Google and Apple Incorporated. Today, McKeesport is known for its annual Pumpkin Festival which features local pumpkin carving competitions as well as live music performances throughout October/November.

However, during World War II,Mckeesport became an important munitions plant due to its proximity to points of production for both war materials and components for aircraft. After the war ended, however, McFeesport began to decline as industries closed down or relocated elsewhere. By 1990, McFeesport had a population of just 100 people.
