Mckeesport, Pennsylvania is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Mckeesport Township was John Forbes in 1792. In 1810, Benjamin Franklin stopped here while on his way to visit the then-new nation of America. A post office was established at Mckeesport in 1827 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1893. In 1876, a railway line was built through the township which made Mckeesport an important commercial center for the surrounding area. During World War II, many factories were built here including two bomber plants and two shipyards producing warships and submarines. After the war ended, many factories closed but some continued operating until they closed again in 2000 or 2001 due to economic recession. Today there are only a handful of businesses remaining in this once vibrant community that still retains much of its early 1800s culture and infrastructure such as a public square complete with a bandstand and pagoda/steeplechase track that can be seen from most of town’s streets downtown. Today it is home to several smaller businesses (some dating back more than 100 years) as well as one large company providing services such as transportation (a taxi service), accounting (a law firm), real estate (a home builder), food service (a grocery store), manufacturing (a car dealership) and retailing (an optometrist). Mckeesport is a town in McKeansport County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The name "Mckeesport" is derived from the Potawatomi word mckaesa-wate, meaning "place where there are many fawns." The first European to visit Mckeesport was Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it after his patron saint, Mary of Hungary. In 1795, William Pitt founded the town on land he had purchased from the Mahoning Valley Land Company and gave it its present name of McKeansport. The first store was built in 1803 by John Pile and others in what is now First Street. In 1812 James Kapp donated land to build a school for nearby McKees Rocks Township which became the nucleus of what would become Mckeesport. On November 11, 1819, George Washington arrived at Fort Mifflin for his crossing of the Delaware River and made an appearance before a crowd of 3,000 people who gathered on Market Square to watch him disembark from HMS “ Vengeance” and walk across Pennsylvania Avenue to Fort Mifflin - still an event that commands significant public attention today! James Kapp's donation also funded construction of a new courthouse Annex Building on Market Square which opened in 1865 as PCU District Court No 2 (later PCU District Court 1). The original jail building located west side Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets served as both jail and court house until 1865 when it burned down due to termites! The post office at 5th & Chestnut Streets served as mail depot until 1893 when it moved to 6th & Pennine Avenues where it remains today (email: pmcd@mailonline). A large influx of immigrants during World War II changed all aspects of life in Mckeeportstown- including economy, demographics, social structures and language barriers. Many Italians were recruited into military service while Germanic refugeesettlement occurred within ten miles (16 km) surrounding towns like Beaver Falls (now Lebanon), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton/Wilkinsburg etc., with only limited access by locals to essential goods such as food or clothing needed for war production such as munitions plants located outside those boundaries; most Germans left town immediately upon their discharge from military service while Italian workers did not leave until 1946 when they too were granted amnesty under President Harry Truman's Executive Order 9066; however some refugees continued living near their wartime homes through RGAs such as Luigi Castellucci who resided just east of McKees Rocks Blvd., next door to GMI Iron Works Incorporated; he later sold property adjacent thereto for development into one of Pittsburgh's largest housing estates known today simply as Castellucci Place.). Today’s McIntyre Elementary School stands on former Jaffrey Brewery site that dates back to 1848 when local brewer Andrew Jaffrey donated two acres (0 hectare) south east corner lot along Third Street Extension then north side Westmoreland Road Extension thence west side Third Street Extension thence northeasterly along extension then easterly alongWestmorelandRoadExtensiontothebasementofanoldbrick warehouse now usedforvarious industrial purposes,.
