Mckeesport is a small town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located along the Susquehanna River. The population was 8,887 at the 2010 census. As of 2009, Mckeesport was one of five municipalities in Perry County which had a total population over 10,000 and all but two were incorporated as towns within less than ten years of their founding; Mckeesport incorporation took place on February 7, 1909. The town was named for Nicholas McGeese (1781-1850), an early settler who built a log cabin on the present-day site of Mckeesport in 1811. A post office called McKeesport was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it closed in 1903. The first residents were farmers who grew corn and other grains for local markets; by 1830, they had also founded a sawmill and gristmill to supply nearby cities with goods produced by their mills. By 1850, most residents were men working in local mills or as farmers; however, some women began to contribute to community life through teaching at local schools and serving on church committees. In 1853–54, during the American Civil War, McKeesport sided with the Union forces over those supporting Confederate General Robert Ewell's army; after the war ended and Reconstruction began following its implementation across America's South,[1] many McGeese descendants returned to their home town[2] and continued contributing to its economy through business ventures such as manufacturing goods such as cigars.[3][4] In 1901–02,[5] McKeesport become one of six townships organized within Perry County when that county was created from parts of Washington County.[6][7] The township's boundaries changed several times during its history: it contained portions of what are now Allentown Township (northwest corner), Reading Township (southwest corner), Doylestown Township (southeast corner), Lebanon Township (east corner) and West Hazleton Township (west corner). At various points during its history, McKeesports annexation by neighboring boroughs led to changes in municipal government: from borough form into township form,[8][9][10] from township form into rural municipality form[11][12], back again into boroughform before finally becoming an unincorporated village within Perry County proper on December 1st 1978.[13] Like many small communities throughout eastern Pennsylvania during the 19th century,[14] Mckeestown experienced rapid growth due largely to white settlement – specifically farming – followed by increased manufacturing activity around Pittsburgh while natural resources like coal became available more cheaply outside metropolitan areas thanks increasinglyto industrialization throughout much of North America starting around 1800[15].
