Mckeesport is a small town in Mckeesport Township, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,147 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Mckeesport were families of Albanians who arrived from Iaşi, Romania in 1847. They called themselves "The Maccabee family." The name may be derived from the biblical figure Machaerus (Mark Antony), who fought against Rome and was crucified on a mountain near Jerusalem. According to one source, the town's name may have come from an early settler's observation that "the mouth of a river runs through it." In 1881, George Witherspoon and his brother James bought land east of present-day Mckeesport and founded what would become Buchanan County. In 1892 they sold their holdings to John Fenton and others, which formed the nucleus of what would become Westmoreland County. In 1893, William Prentice donated land to the town for its own use; this later became known as Park Row square. In 1907, when McKeesport incorporated as a borough, it included portions of Buchanan and Westmoreland Counties within its boundaries as well as all but 1 percent of Allegheny County. Mckeesport, Pennsylvania is a town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. At one time it was the most populous community in Lehigh County. It is part of the Allentown-Easton, PA-NJ-DE metropolitan area. The community of Mckeesport was founded by Nicholas McGhee in 1793 as a small log cabin on the heels of a mountain range and became an important market for agricultural goods from eastern Pennsylvania to central New York City. The Dutch were among those who first settled in what is now Mckeesport and there are several historicDutch buildings still standing in town including the 18th century Flanders farmhouse and barn which are both now used as homes. In 1815 Nicholas McGhee's son John started trading with English traders at his father's urging, beginning what would become an important trade relationship between Easton and Philadelphia that would last until 1840. In 1824 newspaper editor Elijah Hicks purchased 1/8 mile (1 km) of land parcel #2 in present day Mckee Township from Nicholas McGhee for $500 cash only - what is today known as Hicks' Landing - making Mckeesport its permanent home. Hicks began publishing The Evening Express out of his shop on Main Street which quickly grew into one of Northampton County's leading newspapers with offices located throughout all seven counties within Northampton County before moving to Allentown in 1835 when the paper merged with other local papers to form the "Allentown Gazette" under new ownership then becoming "The Morning Call". With increasing rail transportation arriving throughout much of Northeastern Pennsylvania during this period resulting in increased demand for agricultural products and commerce coming through town limits; early entrepreneurs like Hicks saw opportunity to capitalize on this growing industry as well going so far as opening their own stores specializing in these products such as hardware, groceries etc..
