Meadville is a small town in the state of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,014 at the 2000 census. It is part of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton metropolitan area. Meadville has been a manufacturing center for over 100 years and is home to many companies that produce various items such as televisions, automobiles, and other industrial goods. One of the most well known companies in Meadville is Herrick Corporation which produces millions of pieces of equipment each year including tractors and bulldozers. (1933), General Electric Manufacturing Co.(1934). By 1936, all but one of these companies had closed down due to economic changes or World War II military production restrictions. Only Brown & Williamson remained active until its demise in 1966. During World War II, Meadville became an important hub for munitions production as it housed several factories that made artillery rounds, tanks, planes and other war materiel. In 1946, Bethlehem Steel Corporation moved their steel plant from Scranton to Meadville after purchasing Eastern Equipment Company’s assets. Bethlehem Steel employed over 50% of the town’s workforce during its heyday and left behind a legacy of manufacturing excellence that continues today at their new facility on Harbor Drive in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Township adjacent to Lehigh Valley University's headquarters campus. Meadville, PA was founded in 1799 by General James Wilson and is the oldest continuously inhabited town in Pennsylvania. The first settler in Meadville was George Washington who homesteaded land near the present day intersection of Main and State Streets. In 1825, John Lawhorn made a Donation to the Methodist Episcopal Church which helped to establish Meadville as a small town with a rich cultural history. The first post office opened in Meadville on October 14, 1826. The following year, the population of Meadville reached 100 residents. By 1830, the population had grown to 150 and by 1840 it had reached 200 inhabitants. Meadville saw heavy industrial development during its early years including brewing and tanning businesses. With increasing demand for goods exported from America due to the Panic of 1837, mills closed their doors throughout much of Pennsylvania during that period. However, Meadville slowly recovered and by 1850 it had regained most of its former textile production capacity although there were still some mill closures during this time period. In 1870, construction began on what would become Meadville's first large municipal building which served as both an courthouse and jail until 1906 when it was replaced by the current building which stands today on Main Street corner with Isaacson Road. During this time period there also emerged a strong local agricultural industry with crops such as corn, wheat and soybeans being produced locally for local consumption or export purposes. During World War II (1939-1945), many locals enlisted in service within the military including those who worked at Bethlehem Steel Company located adjacent to town limits where they manufactured munitions used in World War II as well as developing new technology for war effort such as radar system development at nearby Park Ridge Arsenal munitions plant

The Meadville post office was established on December 12, 1825, and closed on October 30, 1959. Its ZIP code is 15354. The community was named for John Mead (1783-1851), an early settler in what is now Meadville. Meadville first appeared on a map made by John Lloyd in 1795. At that time it consisted of only six houses and two slaves. In 1800 the population numbered eighty-five people; by 1825 it had grown to one hundred and fifty-four people. In 1815 George Washington purchased land from James White for £50 ($120 Ulysses S Grant would later purchase the same land). This gave Meadville its main thoroughfare—Washington Avenue—and also helped to develop the local economy through trade with neighboring towns such as Uniontown and Kennedy Township.
