Murrysville is a city in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. Murrysville was originally founded by George Washington Murrys and his family in 1795. In 1825, it became part of the new borough of Butler. In 1827, it became part of the new township of North Butler. In 1881, Murrysville was annexed by the city of Pittsburgh. The first store in Murrysville opened in 1824 on Market Street by George Washington Murrays and his wife Anna Maria Schneiderman murrays-smiths. The store continued to operate until 1865 when it moved to its current location on Elm Street near Penn Avenue. The first post office in Murrysville opened on Market Street in 1830 under the name "George Washington." It continued to serve as a post office until 1842 when it changed its name to "Butler." Ira Semonoff bought land adjacent to what would become Millerstown Township east of present day Monroeville Borough on November 25, 1840 from John Swartzendorph for $5200 cash which he paid with wheat that he had brought overland from New York City two days earlier
