New Kensington is a borough in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 31,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-Landover–Rockville School District. New Kensington was founded in 1810 by pioneers from Delaware and Pennsylvania. The original town site was on the east bank of the Schuylkill River between what are now North Street and South Street and Fourth Street and Fifth Street. The name "New Kensington" originated with John Norton, one of the first settlers in what became Philadelphia. Norton had emigrated to America from England in 1683, settling in Maryland where he built a sawmill. In 1730, he moved his mill to what is now Broadwalk Avenue near Spring Garden Township withinPhiladelphia limits; here he began marketing his sawmills' products through local representatives toadrappers who lived along the riverside areas then known as Delaware Valley. His business grew rapidly until 1748 when Indians attacked his mill and burnt it down; Norton rebuilt it at Broadwalk and continued production until his death in 1771." In 1768, Thomas Dixon bought Norton's mill for $4,000 cash which he used to start a new woolen textile company called “Dixon’s Mill” (later renamed “Dixon & Son”). By 1800 New Kensington had become one of the largest cotton mills in North America; its machines made 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) of cloth while spinning up to 2200 yards (2000 m) per minute! In 1824 Dixon merged with another cotton manufacturer named Brown & Williamson who gave rise to Bethlehem Steel Corporation today! At this time there were over 20 mills employing more than 3000 workers manufacturing everything from textiles to automobiles! In 1915 General Electric purchased Brown & Williamson's interest for $2 million making New Kensington an electric city! The community experienced great growth during World War II when thousands of soldiers served within its boundaries including many airmen stationed at nearby Willow Grove Cemetery where they made their home during those difficult times . Today “New Kensington Hawkeye” appears on all types of advertising tags proclaiming that our city has always been proudest boasthers of military service . And like so many other municipalities across Pennsylvanian during that era – whether small or large – post-war prosperity brought about increased development pressures which often led to displacement or even demolition of older buildings—a process known as gentrification! But despite these challenges consistentresidential populations have grown since then averaging over 5000 residents today making New Kensington one of Philly's most vibrant communities!
