On December 12th, 1864, during World War II, Union soldiers burned down part of Fort Necessity which caused great damage to the town center and many homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. On July 1st, 2008 voters approved an amendment to the United States Constitution that granted statehood to Pennsylvania; this gave Norristown its own government with its own laws and taxes. On November 6th of that year residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of annexing neighboring Northampton County into Norristown Township effective January 1st 2009!
