Norristown is a small town in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, located in the eastern section of the state. The population was 11,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first guns were brought over by Dutch settlers in 1638 and were used to hunt game in what is now central Pennsylvania. In 1795, Norristown became one of twelve townships within Philadelphia County. When Philadelphia County was dissolved on March 1, 1801, its residents took with them their respective township boundaries and Norristown remained a part ofPhiladelphia Township until 1812 when it formed its own separate municipality. In 1839, John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry destroyed many trails leading into western Pennsylvania and caused much damage to property and people there. This event led to gun control laws being passed in several states including Pennsylvania which banned most handguns except for shotguns that could be fired from a distance of fifty feet or less. It is the second-largest town in Pennsylvania by population and the third-largesttown in Pennsylvania by land area. The first settlement in Norristown was made on April 14, 1729, when Daniel Boone and his party of settlers founded a small cabin on Little Norrituck Creek. In 1738, John Forbes built a mill on the creek which became known as Forbes' Mill. On July 1, 1741, George Washington's army arrived at Norristown after crossing the Delaware River from New Jersey and marched through town to meet British General Howe near Fort Duquesne. The Battle of Brandywine took place nearby on September 11th of that year and ended with American victory. In 1814, during the Mexican–American War (1810-1821), Major John Cranch led an brigade of horse artillery against a detachment of Mexican soldiers under General Joaquín de la Peña at Chiavaca Rancho Viejo while supplies were being transported through Norristown to Mexico City. The battle resulted in heavy losses for both sides with more than 100 dead on both sides according to contemporary reports; however it is considered one of America's earliest battle successes as Mexicans had not yet learned how to field artillery well. During World War II (1939-1945), Norristown played an important role as one of two key transport hubs between England and North America due to its location between two major military highways: I-95 and I-81/US 19W respectively. More than 12 million people passed through Norristown during World War II including 6 million Americans who worked in war industries such as munitions manufacturing or truck driving; additionally more than 2,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged directly or indirectly as a result of warfare production. Norristown also experienced significant economic growth following World War II with many businesses opening up around transportation Hubs like PNC Plaza mall across from downtown and Allentown Mall across from Interstate 81/US 19W becoming popular shopping destinations for local residents and tourists alike.
