In 1814, Captain George Armstrong erected a 30-foot long pole with a crosshairs at one end to shoot at while standing on the other side of the Pole. This was called Armstrong's Crossroads. In 1833, General John Fetterman built Fort Pitt on Monongahela River beside what is now Allegheny County Courthouse Square. It was used as a military post and also served as the site of the first public shooting gallery in America. At this location, riflemen could fire off rounds from loopholes in the fort walls atgun targets that had been placed there for their amusement. In 1851, two brothers named Edward Aiken began creating targets out of railroad rails that they attached to stakes near Shadyside Avenue and Penn Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh. These targets became known as Aiken's Railsaw Targets because they would be cut down by customers who wanted to try out their new firearms at these locations. The Aiken brothers continued creating these targets until around 1870 when they sold their business to Benjamin Goodwin & Sons who continued making them until 1903 when it closed due to financial difficulties

These advances helped make Pittsburgh one of Americas leading economic powers after World War II; although many industries have left or declined since then, infrastructure has continued to be rebuilt over time including plans for a downtown streetcar system that never materialized
