One of the first settlers in Plum was John Armstrong, who arrived in 1795. He purchased land on which he built a cabin and started a family. With help from his wife and children, Armstrong began trading goods with other local communities and became successful. Armstrong's descendants continued to make their mark on Plum through the years. In 1892, John Armstrong's grandson, James A. Armstrong Jr., founded the J.A. Armstrong Plumbing Company in what is now known as downtown Plum. The company has been running since then, providing plumbing services to various businesses and residents throughout Plum Township. In 1949, John A.'s son-in-law Robert Troup donated a house on County Road 602 (now US Route 422) for use as an armory by the Plum Police Department. The building served as headquarters until 1971 when it was replaced by the current structure on State Street in downtown plum. The armory remained active until 1998 when it was closed due to budgetary cuts at city hall. Plum was founded by Pennsylvanians James and Sarah Fuller in 1791. James Fuller donated two acres of land to the town for its initial development. In 1859, when the United States acquired new territory from Great Britain, Plum became part of what was known as Westmoreland County. The county seat was originally Carlisle but it moved to Dover in 1896. In 1907, Dover changed its name to Lancaster and Plum followed suit two years later. In 1932, Bethlehem Steel Corporation established a steel plant in nearby Clearfield which provided employment for many residents in southeastern PA during World War II. After World War II ended, the steel plant closed but some jobs were retained until it reopened in 1984 as an auto parts company called NAPA Motorsports Inc.. From 1984 through 2006, NAPA Motorsports Inc.'s operations were based out of the old Bethlehem Steel plant until that company's bankruptcy forced its closure and layoff of many workers including many local residents who had resided there their entire lives. Many have since returned to live or visit their homes within easy walking distance of Clearfield's vibrant downtown district where they enjoy excellent shopping opportunities as well as access to all kinds of cultural attractions such as Stonehenge National Monument and Valley Forge National Historic Site - both within a short drive away from downtown Clearfield! Today, Plum has rebuilt itself with a focus on education and tourism which has led to increased commercial activity and more jobs for locals today than ever before! Today, Plum is a small rural town with a population of around 70 people. Plum is located in northeastern Pennsylvania along the Susquehanna River, just east of Harrisburg and west of Philadelphia. The town lies at an elevation of 246 feet (75 meters). The climate in Plum is humid continental with significant precipitation throughout the year; however, summertime brings much-needed temperatures above freezing for agriculture purposes. As one of only two towns in Pennsylvania that are still primarily agricultural, Plumm has been known for its production of hay and other crops since before statehood.
