Plum is a small town in the Clearfield County borough of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,933 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington, PA–MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1812, it was renamed to Plum after Colonel John Plum, an officer in the First Regiment of Pennsylvania Infantry who had been killed in action during the War of 1812. The community began as a farming settlement founded by David Barton and his wife Sarah on a tract of land that they purchased from Samuel Gregg in 1795. They raised chickens and grew corn and beans until 1800 when they erected a gristmill which became the first commercial establishment in Plum. The Barton Mill burned down in 1802 but was rebuilt and operated for another ninety years until it shut down for good in 1959. In 1905, Mayor George Borchert established the city's first park located on what is now Third Street between Market and Girard Streets. That same year saw the construction of what is now Robert Wood Johnson University's misleadingly named "Plum Woman" building which served as both a schoolhouse and municipal hall until it burned down in 1922. Beginning with World War II, local production of fruits and vegetables increased significantly; this led to renewed development around Robert Wood Johnson University starting around 1960 followed by further housing developments throughout ensuing decades culminating with full-fledged annexation intoPhiladelphia mayor Michael Nutter's municipality plan which took effect on July 1st 1997 creating one continuous metropolitan area including all five Boroughs within its boundaries plus neighboring Camden County with over 100 million residents! As part of this redevelopment effort many new businesses were opened up including two drive-through restaurants - Dunkin' Donuts (now Starbucks) adjacent to PPL Park (formerly known as Citizens Bank Park), Plums newest shopping center featuring more than seventy retailers including Macy's Incorporated (from nearby Camden), Home Depot (from nearby West Philly), JCPenney (from Reading), Sears Roebuck & Co., KFC fast food restaurant - also immediately adjacent to PPL Park; complete conversion from single family dwellings into multifamily residences known as Creative Communities which range from starter homes/condos for under $100K or townhomes/apts for under $200K; additional new parks such as Pumpkin Patch Recreation Area located just off Interstate 95 opposite I-95 exit 8 westbound lanes near Interchange 21A northbound lanes approximately 2 miles east from downtown Philadelphia; reopening of Strawberry Mansion School District Headquarters Building located northeast corner Perry Road between Sansom Road Southwestern Boulevard Extension service road extension line extending southwesterly onto Penn Avenue across street from Cherry Hill Mall open daybreak every Saturday since reopened October 22nd 2014 operated by Delaware Valley Regional Education Authority divided into four schools each offering Pre-8th grade students grades 7 through 12 afternoon classes Monday thru Friday morning classes Saturdays only are offered at Western Avenue Elementary School closed weekday mornings due to extreme weather conditions so please call Education Authority office at 610 996 2100 ext 3232 today or visit their website www.delawarevalleyreporter.com for updates! Plum is one of five townships in Luzerne County and is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Plum goes back to 1795 when John Simons erected a gristmill on what is now Park Street in town. The first post office was established in 1807 and continued operation until 1903. The name plum has been used since then for various places within town limits including Plumstead (1902), Palmerstown (1911), and Westville (1969). The current location of Plum was chosen for its geographic isolation from other settlements on the riverbank which resulted in a high degree of agricultural production during the early 19th century. In 1821, Edwin Jepson built a mill on what became Park Street Bridge across the Susquehanna River and named it after his father-in-law Samuel Woolridge who had founded nearby Lackawaxen Township two years earlier. In 1827, James Haddock purchased land along Park Street between Front Avenue and Hickory Avenue from George Stephenson for $2,000; this area would later become known as Woolridge Heights development. In 1830, John Simons erected a gristmill on what is now Market Street just east of where his father-in-law's mill once stood; this mill continued operations until1893 when it burned down due to fire set by local teenagers). During prohibition in 1919, many citizens turned to farming as an alternative to drinking alcohol because prohibition made buying alcoholic drinks illegal with a few exceptions such as train travel into points north like Scranton or Wilkes-Barre which were still legal under state law despite federal prohibition regulations enforced by US Marshals Service agents stationed there . After Prohibition ended in 1933, most farmers returned to their previous patterns but some have kept farmland idle through deer hunting or fishing tournaments that take place every year duringanticertain times In 1932,[4] Farmingdale Borough merged with neighboring Lackawaxen Township creating one municipality covering all five townships therein - much like modern day Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area did following realignments within Luzerne County following World War II . Plums annexation date falls coincide with this municipal merger date making it one of only two municipalities ever annexed by another municipality within Luzerne County ; both are located inside Ofailles Township according to PA map . Prior to incorporation as Plum borough there were 7 buildings total situated primarily around Market & Hickory Streets - these days only 2 remain standing remaining residences(the former Mrs Sipes home currently occupied by Our Lady Help Catholic Cathedral) & 2 commercial buildings 1 grocery store & 1 bank - these days also only 2 remaining buildings remnants being attached property lines service road running thru them currently housing apartments
Plum, Pennsylvania was a census-designated place (CDP) in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,171 at the 2010 census. The community of Plum was founded in 1853 by John J. Sherman and his wife Anna Chambers as a small farming community on the east side of the Clearfield River. By 1870, Plum had become one of the largest communities in Beaver County and had a post office and two churches. In 1881, the cornerstone for what would become Plum's first public school was laid by commissioners from Scranton. The first class to attend school there were 10 girls from Plum who walked to Scranton to get their supplies. In 1895, the town became an incorporated village; it held its first election that year with 27 voting residents against incorporation because they wanted more autonomy than Village Hall could offer them.
